1series & Rough Terrain

Hey guys,

The girlfriend and I are thinking about going up North for the weekend to her Cabin and I want to take my 2012 128i. But the path there is pretty horrendous and consists of steep rocky inclines.

I was wondering if any of you have taken your 1er on 30-40degree gravel inclines? Can we make it up without any problems? Also I have msport package and am a little worried i may get scrapes under the car.

I dont think there should be any problems but I would be at ease if I heard any stories you guys have to offer.

Thanks a bunch, your replies are always so helpful!

To be safe, could you take another car? Or rent a Wrangler?

If I knew that this section of the road would be perfectly smooth and short, even on gravel and at that angle it wouldn't scare me. But if it's rough and full of pot hole, you might regret it.

well...renting was an option I suggested, but we kind of wanted to save the money from that and use it elsewhere.

Thats actually one of the reasons why i posted here so maybe I could hear your stories and opinions and see if renting a car would be necessary.

Thanks,
Mike

as per thoses last photos, i think your good...

If you have snow tires mounted on another set of wheels, this may be an excellent use of them if you are worried about your tires and wheels..

there is alot of plastic and medal protective panels under our cars, so dont be to freaked out if you here some ruckus under there.. a few branches and gravel isnt going to destroy anything..

Like anything else, you'll just have to go slow and steady, and no "dukes of hazzard " jumps.

I don't think it would be a big issue as long as you're not hitting any huge holes. However be careful with mud. I was traveling on some dirt roads recently and it just rained so the dirt roads were completely muddy. Needless to say I turned off traction control and had a little bit of fun. A few hours later I got back onto regular highway and I had a very bad vibration at 110km/h till 160km/h then it smoothed out again. I was lucky to be near my parent's house and my dad has a shop. I ended up pulling the rear wheels off and they were caked in dirt, not a huge amount mind you but enough to create a small pile when removed. Turns out that dirt was throwing off the weight balance of the wheel. Once I washed it all out the car worked like normal.

Just an FYI.

As long as there are no giant holes to bottom out in or large rocks to hurt the tires I doubt there would be a problem. My buddy has a house with a half mile unpaved driveway up hill in northern new york with gravel mud and rocks and I've taken my car up there several times with no problems. Just take it easy and all will be fine.

Where is this northern New York of which you speak?

It can't be any worse than what my car has weathered. Snow, corn field trails, dirt roads.

You find some interesting stuff off the beaten path

My son is buying a bank repossession house with an unpaved driveway that has some erosion on it. I thought it looked iffy for my 128i sport but I've driven on it now several times with no scraping.

technically, driving a rental car on an unpaved road is in violation of your rental agreement. Jus' saying.

Walton. I'm sure there are worse roads out there but the first time I drove this guys driveway I was sure I was going to break something. He pretty much owns a mountain and the house is half way up.

Lol nice. I see these breakdowns usually. Living in Watertown, I usually refer to the 'cuse as central.

If your from the city usually it -> NYC and upstate is north of the city

If your from Albany usually it's -> NYC, Albany, upstate

If your from Syracuse usually it's -> NYC, central (Syracuse), Watertown (upstate)

Thead hijack really quick. SU or Le Moyne? Graduated from Le Moyne in 09 and have friends doing grad work at SU. Always curious about people who venture to central/upstate NY.

Don't do it. Not worth the potential damage from rocks kicking up and chipping paint. Plus, if the road is that rocky and steep, then there will be big bumpy areas that build up where people need to give the vehicle more power to climb. Those spots can have big build up of dirt and rocks while also have big dips on the other side of the bump. Your suspension is not designed to handle that kind of terrain. It sits too low, and you've got that sweet M body kit. Don't ruin it.

I wouldn't risk it. Plus, consider bad weather. If it rains there will be mud, wet loose rocks, potential to get stuck, etc...
Get an SUV or Jeep that are built more for those conditions.
Or an STI with an adjustable suspension and raise it to it's tallest setting.
That would be an awesome ride.
They have those for rental up north don't they?

Hope you don't get a flat....I can only speak for my tires, but mine are prone to flats....and I don't even drive on uneven areas.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great advice! But i actually decided to take the 128i up north to the cabin. Through all the hills and dips and slopes I kept a slow steady pace and let the suv's and mini vans pass me by. I must have looked ridiculous going so slow staying only in 1st or 2nd gear but the outcome was a safe journey to and from the cabin. There were many dips and high spots but there was enough space to slowly maneuver around them. most of the rocks were on average small enough to pass right over but the larger ones were few and far in between so I was able go go around them also. Surprisingly the hills were no problem at all. It was actually fun going up and down such steep hills!

So if you guys are planning trips to where you think your stock m-sport 1series may not make it, believe me, our little one's are very capable of making rough and rocky trips. Dont over do it though, keep a slow steady pace and everything will be fine.
