Timeline wise the 2002 turbo is the grandfather of every sporty Bmw. Bmw loves to promote the 2002 or e30 as a 'spiritual' forefather to the 135i, 1m and m2 but as someone who owns both 2002's and e82's, they are many worlds apart.

I never got it either. Aside from the natural chronology of the models I see no direct link or 'channelling' going on. I think its just BMW attempting to invoke some kind of historical aura around the 1M when it stood alone on its own just fine.
