Did you (really) take all your mods off before servicing?
Hi guys, I am new to this forum and did search before asking.
I have a 2008 135i and am very disappointed with the car''s performance. I am thinking about getting a JB3, I saw the installation video, it does not seem it is something you can do in your lunch break. So my question is: for those who have it, did you go through that painful uninstall procedure every time you service your car? thanks |

I jsut had mine installed this weekend and Alex@Akmotorwerks did it in about 30 mins and that was running a USB cable into my glovebox as well. I mean im sure he has done over a dozen of these installs but you get an idea.

For regular maintenance service, I don't remove any mode.

The JB3 removal is pretty easy, and as others have already said, it can be done in about 20 mins. I don't take mine off for regular service. I just set it to map 0 and take it in. If I'm having warranty work done on the car, it comes off completely though. If they open up the ECU compartment and see non-factory wiring they'll deny coverage.

the pnp JB3 is absolutely something that can be done on a lunch break.
the pin-out JB3 is pretty easy to remove and reinstall even.... takes me about 30-45 minutes to get it in-out |

this makes for a tricky issue if you are getting towed on BMW NA's dime.
If you break down and they send a truck, you have to have all your tools on the side of the road to take out the JB3 and then have a laptop to reset the code ALL before the tow truck gets there to take your car to the dealer.. anyone experience this? and no, the tow truck wont take your car home first.. lol I guess you can have them take it home then tow to the dealer on your dime, but that would be big $$

I'm still in awe of the "very disappointed with the car''s performance" comment. What were you expecting? Our cars get to 60 in the same amount of time as a Ferrari F355 and not even a second slower than a 360 Modena. For $43k I would be an idiot to be disappointed.

I came from an Exige that revved all the way to 9k with a nice kick from a cam change at 6k. I am not disappointed in the least with the 135. It's designed to be driven daily and comfortably. You should have known going into it that a TT 6 would not have the same power delivery as a high revving NA 6 or 8. I thought that was common knowledge.

Considering the OP hasnt responded yet, we should give him the benefit of the doubt on his comment "dissapointed with 135i's performance". Maybe he didn't explain himself well enough.
In any case, I removed every single mod before I went in for service. I even washed the ECU cover to get rid of my finger prints and dirt that got on it. For an hour of work, why should I take a chance?

Screw it, go baller like me and never take a car in to get serviced. 3 months out the door on my last car I upgraded turbo, clutch, and everything else outside the internals. Never happier to do all the work myself.
And not one major fault that I didnt cause myself by added upgrades. Unless its an utter lemon, or the engine blows after a few months, no worries, screw the stealerships. |

Doing that on this car may very well mean you're shelling out $400 for replacement fuel pumps two or three times during the warranty period though. On most cars I'm not generally concerned about the warranty on the powertrain, but in this case I think it's worthwhile to try and keep in intact as long as you can. |

I've got in the JB3 removal down to 15 minutes using a cordless drill for the 8mm bolts. I just leave the USB cable in there, you cant see it in the DME box unless you really look for it.
There are people who leave it in when going for service and change to map 0 (pass through) and it is undetectable unless you open the DME box and look. |

The pump would be the only issue, but its supposedly rectified for MY11, we shall see.... And if it is the fuel pump going bad, its a known fault and they cannot holdout replacing it for free... but they can void the warrante on everything else that they see modified.

I say I am disappointed because the car (in stock form) seems very slow accelerating. I guess I was too impressed by the specs of 300 hp 6cyl bi-turbo. I had owned a 99 mustang gt, which with 260 declared hp feels a lot faster than the 135i.
My last car was an 06 Evo. While I wasn't expecting the explosive power of that little 4, the 135i did not reach my expectations. Whether you find it very fast or not, depends on what you've been driving. I believe the JB3 will resolve the problem, just by reading the other people's reviews on it. Oh, what happens if you don't service your car? Can you erase those service warning messages? |
