Xenon Adaptive Headlights Fogging UP!

Is this normal? I noticed that my headlights fogged up. It was raining the day I took delivery and the first thing I noticed is that there is condensation in the inside of the headlights. After I turned off my car for a few minutes, the condensation/fog went away.

Doesn't sound normal to me. Maybe another member will know for sure. How do you like your xdrive, xdrive?

Man! I am really getting pissed off!!!!

I only have 30 miles on my 330xi and it's in the dealer to get the clutch replaced. Now am I hearing people on this forum telling me that the headlights are not suppose to fog up.. AND my freakin' car's headlights ARE fogging up.

How is the xdrive on my car? I haven't had enough time to actually drive my car yet b/c the clutch is bad!!!

That still sucks about your clutch, but at this point I'm not sure I'd be too worried about the lights fogging up. I thought everybody's did. Mine do, I know there have been several threads from others who are experiencing it, and even many E46's (including a 2005 loaner I had a couple months ago) had the problem.

IMHO, not to worry, at least not yet. And if there ever is a major problem with the fogging issue, expect a large recall and we'll all be there at the dealer, lined up right behind you.

Happy New Years!

Apparently this is normal when the car is new.
Something to do with being exposed to high moisture environment during shipping at sea.
Problem should go away after a few uses of the headlights... drives away the moisture.

Thank YOU ALL for the replies. Hopefully when I get my car back fixed, I will be able to spend enough time with my car and figure out if the condensation w/ the headlights will go away or not... Only time will tell...

it's normal as far as i can tell for the moment. I have it too. It only occurs when the weather is really cold. Even new cars on the lot has them. So I don't think there's a fix yet.

the problem starter is that there is moisture. most likely a tiny bit of water in your headlights. if it doesnt go away within a week then definitely take it to the dealer and they'll probably replace the whole headlight unit because the adhesive they use on the headlights are pretty much impossible to open. good luck

When we took delivery of our E91 in mid October it was raining and cool out. The headlights fogged on the inside and I was concerned too. But it has not happened since. I think this may be normal when the car is brand new - probably some moisture trapped inside when they are made. If it doesn't continue I wouldn't worry about it. If it does - get them to replace them.

My headlights would fog up when I first got the car. It would happen when it rains. So far it hasn't been happening anymore.

Fogging of the headlights happens in all new cars. Turn the headlights on and take a nice little road trip and it will be fine, just need to burn the moisture out. No biggie, my last 4-5 cars had this issue and they all fixed themselves within the first week or after a trip with the lights on. Best of luck!

Yes its normal. It happened to me a lot when the car was new, cut come to think of it, it hasnt happend much lately. The lights do need to breath a bit to allow for expansion of the air in the headlight area, Dont worry, unless they are full of water or completley fogged to the point the lights dont work, then its normal.

mine had fog on delievery too - went away really fast. It happened, in my case, because it was cold and raining outside where the car was, then car was taken in to the warm show room for delievery, thus....fog.

Mine hasn't fogged in the first 3-4 months and started to fog 2 weeks ago after I washed the car. And last week after I washed the car, it fogged again. It took 2-3 days for the fog to go away.

I brought the car to the dealer and they replaced it with a brand new one. It's under warranty.

It seems to me that your fogging is a little different from mine. See if it ever fogs again, in which case you might want to bring and show it to the dealer.

Fogged up headlights is not normal. They should be sealed. Check rear cover of headlights, maybe it is not tight enought.

When my dad bought headliughts from Taiwan, for his Accord. Same thing happened. Fogged lights means cheap quality.

Resurrecting this old thread...

Now that summer rains are upon us...my headlights been fogging up pretty badly the last few times I've driven it in the rain. It doesn't completely render the lights useless, but it looks terrible and cheap.

The earlier posts indicated the then cold temperatures and new deliveries being factors.

Could this also apply for humid summer rains? Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I tend to switch on the full headlights only when it gets really bad, most times I start off with the Angel eyes first...could this be a factor i.e. introducing the high temp main lights some period after the parking lights?

I noticed this in my e46 a few weeks ago. I was driving in the rain with only the parking lights on for 3 hours and when I got home both lights were fogged. I turned on the headlight+highbeams for a few minutes and it went away. It never happens when I have the headlights on though, just the parking lights. Maybe its a similar situation for you?
