Talking Power on stock stuff??

So, the mod bug bit and on the way are a JB4 Stage 2, cP-e chargepipe, and BMS OCC. Working with a shop to have a walnut blast done and full tuneup while it's in there (spark plus/oil/oil filter/air filter/etc.).

Two main questions... Anything else I should do in prep for more power? And, is there anything I should worry about hurting?

My main concern will be the clutch, which has 57k on it but still feels solid.

I will most likely be running map 1 primarily.

I think you will be fine... Please post pics and opinion of walnut blast. I have 43K and have been tuned for ~10k. I go back and forth regarding the need, and i thinkat 50 i will say eff it and just have it done, plus im super anal about maintenance, i drive 12k a year and change the oil every 3-4K...

I'm in about the same boat as you mileage and maint-wise.

I am doing the walnut blast because the shop near me comes recommended by other 1addicts and only charges $430 for the full job with gaskets.

Will definitely document it.

N55 does not need walnut blast.

Is this proven? I have heard so much on both ends that I was ready to have it done just for peace of mind...

I believe e36addict had it done and it was completely unnecessary.. maybe he can comment, but he definitely told me it was a waste.
However when my charge pipe broke I did find some oil on the inside, indicating that some was getting through. One thing for sure is that the system was redesigned in N55 to prevent much of the oil recirculating and coating the valves....

Interesting... Well I've got a BMS OCC to go in as well so maybe I'll leave it at that then. Thanks for the input!

The engine already has an oil separator and a properly designed head to prevent buildup on the valves. Catch cans are 100% engine bay bling, and furthermore, they don't even do a good job of what they claim to do in the first place, which is remove oil vapor from your inlet charge. Witness the multitudes of people on earlier DI engines like the mazdaspeed DISI, VW FSI / TSI, and N54, who ran catch cans, and still had as much buildup as anybody--regardless of all the fluid they periodically empty from the can.

The companies that make catch cans know this, but don't mind selling them anyway.

If you want a real solution, route your PCV to the exhaust or atmosphere (dirty engine bay beware). Otherwise, you're wasting time and money.

Yeah I definitely will too, I mean it's only gonna help if anything.

I also remember reading on E90post that a Dinan tech told a guy he was crazy for selling his OCC, and promptly bought a new one lol

As for walnut blast, I have been talking to shops locally. I am gonna call around and see if i can get some solid answers about it for N55.

Here's a recent post from Silenus (a BMW tech AFAIK) about walnut blasting and the N55 engine.

Interesting, I guess I'll leave it for now and figure on getting the job done around 75k then.
