Going with Mobile 1 tomorrow
and the shop uses valvoline oil filters. I was planning on DIY, but came across this coupon for a great deal. Anybody have any experience with this set up?
Thanks! |

Hope it's not one of those quick lube places? It may be cheap but you may regret it.

Not sure about valvoline oil filter, but filter wise, anything other than OEM/Mann/Mahle/Wix filter is a no go.
That has been the case for any EU cars for me. For the oil, I hear M1 isn't bad and a lot of people swear by it but somehow it is not approved for BMW LL01, or something like that.. Not sure what kind of deal you got but I would rather spend $45 bucks for 10 Qts of Castrol 0w-40 (Walmart), $10 bucks for Mann filter and 15 minutes of your time for DIY. For $55, you basically have enough oil for 1.5 Oil change and well known filter that you can't go wrong with.. |

Maybe I should get my own oil filter......the $50 oil change with the mobile seems like a great deal, using a "members only discount" coupon a co worker gave me.

5Qts/4.7L of Castrol Edge 0w-40 = $23 at Walmart.
Spend $50 bucks and you have 1.5 Oil change(s) worth of oil. |

I've used Mobil 1 0W 40 on my turbo cars for 10+ years with accumulations of 150K mi. Porsche approved for turbos and BMW approved for our cars. Can be found at WM for about 25 for 5q jug.

I got 2 large 5qt containers in my garage. I guess i can go check if its the old bottles with the bmw certification. Regardless, if its still approved for Porsche & AMG turbos its good enough for me. I'll probably change it before the recommended time on the dash anyways.

This in a nutshell. Now, the newest BMW engines may have some slight changes in oil demands but your model should be fine with what you've been using, not that I would put M1 0W-40 in my car but...

Agree a change in engine requirements could be real. Since I will never go past ~7,500 miles, I wouldn't rule out Mobil 1. However, been a Castrol user for many years.

I've heard too many bad things about M1 0W-40 from the guys who rebuild Porsche engines to swear me off of it. Mobil does put out some other fine oil products, however.
Been using Motul in the 128i and Rotella T6 in the E46. Mobil V-Twin 20W-50 in the 993. |

I would only have the oil changed by a dealer or BMW independent!
BTW, Mobil 1 0W40 is approved by BMW. Use only Mann, Mahle, or BMW filters. The media in a Valvoline filter will cause big problems. I have 11 5qt jugs of Mobil 1. I just noticed 5 say BMW and 6 don't. I'll have to use the 6 in my Merc! Last edited by Mr Rooty Von Tooty; 07-18-2016 at 12:04 PM.. |
