Retrofitting I-Drive
Hey Everyone
We finally bought a 135i - got a deal, low KM, excellent cndition, but no I Drive. It wasn't a deal breaker though and saved thousands. The 1 series's without I drive have a compartment in the middle, so it seems removal and replacement of the dash wouldn't be neccessary, but in addition to this, does anyone know the approx cost involved in retrofitting ideally the Professional Navigation I Drive to a 135i? If I'm correct, with the newer I Drive you can connect an ipod via USB directly, thus not using the Y Cable and keeping the signal chain all digital. Cheers |

Congrats on the car!
TBH just use a USB drive for music, also much easier to put music in with drag & drop (I hate iTunes). Unless you're a mac person. I used to really want to retrofit an iDrive when I first got the car but then played around with it in other cars and was kinda "meh". There is a "retrofit kit" being available (http://www.bimmerretrofit.com/portal.../brc01p10.html) but you will need to ship it over (just the parts will cost $2,000 to $3,000 plus shipping) plus install costs you're looking at around $5,000.00. OR you could try an aftermarket option: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=760484

Congrats on the new car. I picked mine up the week before christmas and havent stopped driving since
I was in a similar position to you and found the car I wanted but it didn't have iDrive it wasn't a show stopper so I still pulled the trigger and got it. I have been doing some research over the past couple of weeks and it looks like you can retrofit idrive. As knightelf mentioned there is a company in canada bmwretrofit and another one in Europe bimmer-tech that both sell the full kits. I exchanged a few emails with bmwretrofit as they were having a special on before the end of the year (~$300 off). It sounds like it would be a fairly easy install for a DIY kind of person. However be aware it also looks like you need to get a couple of trim pieces from BMW, the piece of trim that replaces the cup holders that the iDrive controller clips in too and the piece of trim that goes around the climate control and cic computer in the center dash. I did a bunch of searching on here and a few other forums and I couldn't find anyone that had actually documented doing the retrofit to a 1er plenty seem to have done it to e90's. My main concern was if the dash needed to be cut or if the iDrive screen would clip straight in to the storage bin hole. bmwretro fit told me that it clips straight in, in 'most' situations. I havent pulled the trigger yet, but I am certainly thinking about it. |

If I was good with DIY I probably would've done it already Any idea if it would void the BMW warranty?

Thanks guys. Looks like though it would be upwards of 4k. Thats a lot of high end audio gear/power mods! Been using the USB drive and slowly getting used to it. Also ordered an A2DP adapter so lets see how that sounds

Actually the parts shipped from Canada are "only" $2700 - and they will code for you, and I can DIY. Other than centre console (Can put controller anywhere for the time being), what else would I need?

So in addition to this - http://www.bimmerretrofit.com/portal.../brc01p10.html
What do I need? Centre console? What about relocating the climate control unit on top how do we do that? |
