Another thing that helps in my cars is using rain repellant on the windshield. I used to apply Rain-X which is a bit of work. Now I just use glass cleaner with rain repellant in it. Sometimes I put in washer fluid with repellant. Rain-X works a bit better than the other application methods but with any of them the rain beads up like water on waxed paint. That makes the wipers work better and also makes me less sensitive to the wiper speed. Might be someting to try for those of you that are dissatisfied.

I do not think I have ever used them on my wife's 135i. Then again, we have only driven it in the rain once since owning it...
I just would hit the stalk manually when I needed a wipe... |

I was driving home from work last night and with 3' of snow on the ground and freezing drizzle in the air the rain-sensing wipers were useless. I was essentially manually turning the wipers on at the appropriate times. for my entire 1-hour+ ride home. In that case they were not only useless but outright dangerous. I would have given my left nut for plain old intermittent wipers.

There in lies the problem. Until you are willing to give your right nut, BMW will not consider it important enough to add/address. My 2007 300c SRT8 had the option to turn the 'rain sensing' on or off. When off, was just the plain old intermittent wipers. |

Seems I touched a nerver with this. Just proves that some times so called "new and improved" technology isn't.
Like foghat said: Just give us a way to turn off the rain sensing option. Hey Dackel: Do you know if this can be done in one of the secret menus? |

The video SAYS you can have normal intermittent use by not hitting auto (green light not lit), but that is complete BS. They sense your speed and will not have a uniform interval.

FWIW: pages 71 and 72 of the BMW 1er Owner's Manual 2013 (USA):
(see also: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...82&postcount=1) And also don't forget the check the wear and tear status of the wiper blades.

The other giveaway is he says to turn off the system, push the button again. At which point you have no intermittent/sensing at all. |

I have an E92 with navigation. In the menu there is a place to alter the sensitivity of the automatic turning on/off of the headlights. I was getting very frustrated with my windsheild intermitent wipers until I remembered that I had changed the setting from "Sensitive" to "Normal". Putting the auto 'headlight' feature back to "sensitive" seemed to fix it. I was left wondering if the setting of sensitivity affected all of the 'auto' functions, including headlights, wipers and rearview mirror..... just a thought. If you haven't tried it, see if it makes a difference for you.

Unpluging Sensor
First post here!
On another forum it was suggested that simply unplugging the rain sensor will give you control with set intervals like a vehicle without auto wipers. I can confirm by my own trails that unplugging the sensor will not automatically revert back to a factory interval with the thumb wheel. It will however provide a slower setting (longer delay between wipes) but this does not change with thumb wheel setting or speed. This is on a 2011 135CP. My problem was that in light rain the auto always wanted to go full bore, and I mean only a fraction slower than the first manual setting. Sensitivity settings seem to have no affect, thus the reason I tried to unplug the sensor in hopes of a more traditional fixed interval operation. |

Haven't had trouble with light rain sensor on my 09'. I think it's more in recent model years...
Had a loaner this past week and could tell it wasn't working at all in light rain. Seemed to be 1-2 speeds too low.

Yup, since day 1 the rain sensing feature hasn't worked as I would like it to. Light rain or a mist of water (like passing a big rig) and the wipers will go to warp speed while I'm driving. If it is goes from a drizzle to heavy rain it won't do anything except swipe ever so often while I'm driving. I wish they wouldn't force features on cars that people don't want, that's why their are options. I have a lot of time using the wipers as in WA this is the time of the year for all types of rain; misty to heavy but with light rain being the norm.
It seems it likes and works on the smaller particle's of water as opposed to the heavy, big drops of water. I guess next time I go to the dealer I'll ask for a recal on the system and see if that works. |

Not mine... I've used the auto feature quite a bit and it's worked just fine. *knock on wood*

I love mine. Hard to believe we're talking about idiosyncrasies of something so trivial as a windshield wiper control circuit, but that's why it's called 1addicts!

Mine work just fine i guess you gotta get use to them however like everything created by man they're not perfect. My dad once took my car out for a quick spin to pick up something and it was raining that day (it was like his 2nd time driving it). Man when he came back he was livid, all he did was complain about the wipers and how he didn't know if they were on or off, I was rolling.

Oh, one odd thing: the auto sensing/wiping feature always has to be turned on the first time... It never stays in the auto mode once you turn off the engine.
