It's official.. my favorite car
After being able to drive pretty much any bmw on any given day, I have to say, without a doubt, the 1 series (stick shift) is my favorite. Compared to most of the others, it is just so much fun to drive. The feel, the balance, drive position etc is great.

People are really bias toward that E46 M3. I saw a video review by Edmunds.com where they compared a 135i, a 335i and a 2002 E46 M3. In the end they actually recommended people by a used E46 M3 over the other two! I couldn't believe it, they actually recommend people buy a 6 year old used car with no warranty over two brand new cars. That just seemed ludicrous to me.

I have driven the E46M3. The 135i rides better and drives better. All that low down torque really makes a difference. Even the Step is 50 times better than SMG. The writer is probably trying to sell his M3 YOMV

so you could potentially select any of the 3 cars and use the article to back up your conclusions. All i care about the article is that 135 won most of the objective categories. 0-60, quarter mile, slalom, etc. times for all 3 cars were relatively bad, but it doesn't matter, i'm just looking at the comparison.

granted the suspension of the zhp was nicer, to me the cars are similar in personality & feel. They feel lighter than they are, strong, smooth engines, only 5hp between the two. The shifter action of the zhp is a little nicer. Similar interior space. I would probably rate the zhp just a notch above it overall, but not by much. Put BMW's "performance" suspension in & short throw shifter & I'll put them equal. Both cars have that "fun to drive" thing about em. For those cars it's not about out right power & speed, but more about balance & being able to carry that speed, smoothly.

AMEN BROTHER! The simple fact is the old m3 will NEVER have our TT engine. One of the most amazing 6 ever made. And the 335i will NEVER have our nimbleness, and yes...we are less $$$. Muahahaha! The only thing that would make this amazing car better is if you got a Vert!

I think they pick the M3 because it does feel a lot more special than either a 135 or 335. The car feels like a race car and has a much nicer exhaust note. The 135/335 have a similar experience (muted exhaust note, flat turbo powerband)
The M3 makes you want to rev it and rewards you with that wail and you feel like it is always getting faster as the power increases with revs. Both of the turbos have plenty of torque, they just don't feel like race cars. That is why the chose the M3 over the other cars. I personally would go with the newer car since you never know how badly the previous owner beat the M3. And many are beaten to death. |

E46 M3 is the other car on my list...cant find many manual with low miles in boston area.
Is anyone concerned with carbon buildup on intake valves due to direct injection. Im driving a VAG 2.0TFSI and this seems to be a concern because of crankcase breathing to the intake without fuel injection upstream of the valves? I should probably start searching in the 335 forums. |
