Regular vs Run Flat

My apologies if this has been discussed earlier, just wanted to know if I changed my tires from run flat to regular tires will this affect the alter system that give the status of my tires.

From what I have read in other topics that have been discussed; run flats are expensive when compared to regular tires.

I'm thinking of changing my tires to the regular ones. What do you guys think!

If you're talking about the tire pressure monitoring system, then no, it will not affect it if you install regular tires. All TPMS does is tell you if you're below tolerance of the specified tire pressure.

Go for it...ditch the heavier, harsher-riding, over-priced, one-time-use run-flats for normal tires. Keep a mobility kit in the trunk for when a TPMS sensor does go off (indicating a loss of pressure) -- just remember to react to it immediately.

www.leatherz.com retails a space-saver spare for the 1-series if you want it for longer trips.

The only thing that you will lose, is poor handling skinny tires that give off a harsh ride. Also the thought of getting a flat, running on it, and losing $350 per tire.

Most have BMW Assist, or at least AAA or NAC.

Change them!

Much better ride on the non run-flats. Smoother and a lot less jitter on rough surfaces. I'm on regular winter tires now, but I also plan to change my summer set to slightly wider (+1) regular tires.

Can BMW void any coverage because of removing the OEM installed run-flats, and installing a more standard tire design? I would think not...

Well then they will just have to go then.

I've got this 335 loaner out here w/some normal Pilot Sports on it, and that is the way the car should come standard issue, w/out question.

Just simply spot-on handling!

I changed mine out about a month ago to a set of all-seasons. The improvement in the ride is instantly noticable, especially over expansion joints and other small, sharp jolts.

The grip from the Run flats was pretty good while they were new, but it faded rapidly as they wore. My rears were completely shot by 14k miles, and replacing them that often is just an absurd amount of money compared to a normal set of performance tires.

Personally I'm taking my chances with a flat instead of putting up with the RFs.

When I replaced my Z4's Bridgestone 050A runflats with Goodyear F1 GS-D3 regular performance tires, the ride improved, but only marginally - and the handling was essentially the same. So unless the cash is burning a hole in your wallet, I'd wait until the original tires are worn before switching over to non runflats.

Is it also true that run flat tires goes bad quicker than regular tires?

For some, they say they do. For me personally they have lasted. I currently have about 10K on em and have driven hard on em many times. There is still plenty of tread on mine.
