Steel Wheels
I bought a set of BMW 16" steel wheels from Tire Rack for my E46 and have been using them for winter tires for about 8 years. Unfortunately, they haven't been available for quite a while - perhaps Gill can shed some light as to why.

I think the issue is that although it'll be winter soon you will not have snow on the ground all the time. So, those times when it's dry or just raining you have seriously reduced your vehicles performance by adding unsprung weight by using steelies.
Your handling will change significantly as will your acceleration and stopping ability. So, if it's strictly a money thing then fine but just know what you're doing to your 1.

I'm well aware of what a downgrade steelies would be. But unlike Vancouver, TO snows a heck of a lot more. I just don't see the reason behind getting another set of decent rims in the winter, where you could easily dent or scratch your your rims (pot holes, sliding into a curb, brushing against the icy snowbanks, etc). Yes it will hurt the performance of the 1 but, I'm not going to be doing any performance driving in the winter. I rather save the extra money buy a great set of track trims/or panty droppers next yr.
I was just wondering if steelie would clear the breaks....I doubt it but, if anyone can confirm that would be great. |

I understand that the steel 17" donut from the X3 will fit over the brakes with out any spacers (unlike the 335i). So why not the 17" OEM steelies? Go to your dealer and order one, see if it will fit.

Might want to check this thread:
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6472 Notice the Style 12 wheels. Although it seems that they are only 16", which means they'd fit the 128i, but probably wouldn't clear the brakes on a 135i. |

Have you ever lifted a 17" steel wheel plus tire? I helped a friend put on a set of steelies on a 16" rim once and they were HEAVY!!! Just go to tirerack and get some aluminum wheels. I bet you won't get cheaper steel wheels in Canada then one of the cheaper aluminum wheels on tirerack.

back on topic, if the steelies are dirt cheap I wouldn't mind getting em either since it does snow often in Toronto. At least this year is supposed to be a lot more frequent so I've heard. Edit: Just looked on the Bumperguard site and they're on sale for $69.95 with free shipping w00t! lol |

BMW Canada offers a 16" steel wheel and wheel cover package with RFTs for 1600 or so. Does anyone know if they would fit the Canadian 128i sport with the 18" wheels?

Guys!!
I'm diggin out the thread because I'm currently running performance 135i brakes and before I go crazy buying set of winter tires for 17" wheels I need to know if 16's could be used if spaced out properly? I'm currently running 5mm spacers on 255 rear and 10mm on 225front so with my set of steelies being 205 all around there should be more than enough space to try it

What tire size are you running? I'm looking at g35 take offs but those are 225/60/17 Isn't 60 too tall?

Tirerack has no steelies for us, and there's nothing available in 16" and below. The downside to having such awesome brakes (other than all that brake dust!). 17" non-steelies are the "lowest"/smallest rim that really fits on a 135i, as far as I know, unless they make some ridiculously spacious alternative. I've seen some 17" alloy rims on tirerack (such as Elbrus or Moda) that are about 100 bucks each, which isn't that bad..

Common guys - you buy a beautiful car and want to put cheap, ugly wheels on it? For God's sake, at least spend a few hundred on cheap alloy wheels.
