Ethanol Question

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it. Does E30 = 30% E85 and 70% Unleaded Gasoline, E40 = 40% E85 and 60% Unleaded Gasoline?

just like E10 is 10% ethanol. E30 refers to 30% ethanol. mixing 30% e85 with 70% gasoline will get you around e25 as there is 15% normal fuel already in your e85.

keep in mind though it is close pretty close generally and alot of places alter the ethanol content throughout the year. (that e85 might actually be e75 or even less).

the only real way to know the ethanol content is to install an inline analyser.

Yeah str8shot is not correct. E(whatever) refers to the percentage of ethanol in the fuel mixture. E85 is 85% ethanol (usually closer to 82% depending on time of year and where you live). Use an Ethanol tester and calculator for your mixes. Calculators can take into account the 82ish% ethanol in E85 and the 10% in regular gasoline. For example, the 135i has a 14 gallon tank. 7 gallons of true E85 and 7 gallons of 93 will net you E48.

i wouldn't worry too much about it. closed loop fuel system will take care of the variation in ethanol content as long as you get the ethanol content close to what the cars tuned for.

it's not just the extra octane from the ethanol that helps but also the extra cooling ability of it.

I answered it quickly, assuming he was using E85 interchangeably with ethanol.

But yes, you are correct.

OP - if you really want to know what your content is, get an analyzer.

What blend requires an upgraded LPFP? I'm on stock and would like to try out a little. Might not be worth it.

Always know what you're putting in your tank.

Also stock don't even bother using E85, only will benefit if you're tuned. If you're NOT specifically tuned for E85 your car safely run about 1-2 gallons per tank. Upgraded fuel pump will be able to run about E60-E70. But honestly highest you want to go is E60ish unless you add supporting mods to hit 100% E85.
