Oil temp Gauge - 2 cars different default?

So this is my 2nd 135i and even on a cold start it sits at 71 when I turn the car off. However my previous one would go all the way to 70.

It's misleading as I thought it was warm when really its the starting point.

Where does yours sit when you turn the car off? 70? 71? Something else?

Perhaps your sensor is off because cold oil is well below 70.

I noticed on cold start the engine oil would vary approximately between 24-38 degrees celsius depending on weather/season. I was able to obtain this info through the electric Performance steering wheel.

It's unfortunate that our oil gauge isn't digital or start at 0. BMW are actually moving away from displaying oil gauges altogether in some of the newer models.

Easy enough to fix, remove the cluster and there are 4 screws on the back of the housing. Unclip the clamshell and remove the internals from the instrument cluster. Then physically pull off the temp dial (it is only held in via friction) and put the dial back on at zero.

I had to do something similar on my Audi after soldering on a new LCD which required the removal of all the dials. Ideally you should use the diagnostics software (INPA) to set the dials to known positions and then put the dials back on then.

JB4 hijacks some of the dials depending what mode or function you set it to.
I think it self calibrates the dials, I remember changing maps on-the-fly and the rev needle was stuck at 1500rpm driving on the freeway in 4th gear lol, I simply changed back to Map1 and the revs readings went back to normal.

The JB4 has a gauge hijack and re-calibrate function. Works a treat!

Whats funny is that BMW wanted 220$ an hour to investigate. I told them 'i'd google' and went and installed a JB4 I bought for about $400 lol..

So turns out I need to do this. It reverted back somehow. I think somehow someone has had to take it off and put it back on 0 however as RimasRS commented in this thread, http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=762467

"NOTE putting back all needles you have to put them lower than zero because when you connect speedo back to car and turn ignition on they will slightly go up and stay like that."

I think that is what has happened here. As it was fine after I disconnected the battery and installed JB4 however somehow went back up and is staying there.

Even when I recalibrate the gauges, it still stays up. Will be making the change this afternoon. Updates to come

Disconnecting battery resets it to the right place.. I don't know why it keeps going back though
