Post break-in
Well, I'm past 1200 miles and needed some advice. I know the manual says you can gradually start increasing speed and RPM but I'm wondering how prone to damage the engine still is if I put the hammer down?
Also, how well do these engines stand aggressive driving? I like the torque availability at low RPM and hence the kick in the back when taking off from a stop, or when having to overtake etc., but don't want to get reduced engine efficiency in a much shorter time compared to someone who takes off gently and pretty much babies the engine. |

well im not completely sure. but the most performance you will see, given proper break in, is around 30,000 miles. too bad my e46 lease is up around this time
as for bmw engines. they love to be wound up, and from experience in my two bimmers prior to the new ones delivery, they seem perfectly happy running high rpms. this is also within reason, just dont run 5,000 for extended periods. i dont know about the new e90, but the e46s got the most torque at 3,500 rpm, so they seem to be perfectly happy around middly rpms |

I would ease into it. but very quickly...
Every drive you take, just use it a bit more So for break in you could only rev to 4000... Warm your car up, and rev to 5000 today, warm your car up and rev to 6000 tomorro, Warm your car up and rev to 7000 the next day... Now you can just drive as normal :-) |

I agree with the redline. I had a Z06 and beat the crap out of it even on the test drive. My car always ran faster 1/4 times then all other stock Z06's at the track and on the street. Once the car is broken in drive it like you would everyday.

My salesperson said there is NO break in limits on this car. Jut to vary the RPMs.

I got 400 miles on my 330i on city streets and highways in LA before taking a 1200 mile drive from LA to Seattle.
Around the 1300 mile mark when the interstate opened up a bit I floored the car and hit about 120mph. I have been very generous with the gas since, but not so generous with the speed, that was a one-time short sprint. Quite frankly if the car isn't ready to do what its supposed to after 1300 babying miles, its BMW's fault not mine.
