128i Engine Whine?
Just picked up a new 128i a few days ago, has about 1100 miles on it now.
At low rpms, the engine makes a slight whine noise. It does it whether I\'m in gear or not. Is this normal? Does anyone else\'s car do this? |

I also have a 2012 128i around 1000kms and it makes a whining noise also when I start the car and put it into first gear. Although to me it sounds like its coming from the transmission rather than the enigne. The sounds does dissapear however as soon as i take off. Ill have to listen better next time it happens....but yea im also getting a sort of weird whining noise also

Ah, sorry for missing some important points...
It's a 6 speed. And, I can hear the whine between 1500 and 3000 rpms or so. Maybe a little higher too, but by that point the engine and exhaust start to drown it out. I tested rolling along in 2nd gear around 2500 rpm. Heard the whine. Took it out of gear, and kept on the gas to hold it around 2500 rpm, and still heard the whine. It changes pitch as the rpm changes. It sounds like the same kind of whine that some cars make when you're stressing out their power steering by turning when you're at a standstill or cranking it to the stops. Also, maybe related, when I'm starting from a standstill in 1st, sometimes I hear something spooling up. Sounds a little like a jet engine does when it starts, or maybe like a turbo. Like a few things spooling up in quick succession. I suspect this noise is something else though, like transmission or diff. |

Mine definitely does this a bit. I noticed on the drive home from picking the car up that low rpm in 2nd gear would produce a whine from about 1500-3000 rpm, then it faded out or you couldn't hear it.
I'll try and do the same 2nd gear rolling test and let you know. |

i'm assuming its the transmission whine bc when you watch racing footage from inside a car, those high performance race cars have a similar whine noise but a LOT louder.
That or it's just something in the engine (i dont want to use this word cuz there isn't a turbo but...) "spooling" up so to speak. |

Well, I noticed a little engine whine but the transmission whine was much more noticeable. When I put the clutch in it got a lot quieter. My car's at 1 yr/15k miles for reference.
This probably doesn't help much but the first few weeks I noticed all kinds of 'is this normal?' noises. It may just be that because your car is so new everything's 'tight' and will take a bit to bed in. |

Yeah, I'm glad to hear someone else's makes that noise too. Maybe it'll go away with time. I'm planning to do a break-in oil change soon (almost there, 60 miles to go!) and we'll see if that does anything. I'm not really expecting it to though.

On the other hand, if so many other people have noticed the same thing, maybe it's normal...

Thanks for more confirmation Bob. I've been contemplating stopping by the dealer for a test drive, just to see if I can notice any other cars doing it too. The noise does bug me, but I'd feel a lot better if "it's supposed to do that."
I also have this annoying little hairline horizontal scratch on my windshield, about 1.5" long. Noticed it after I was a few miles away from picking up the car. Maybe worth mentioning? I don't want to end up being "that guy" with all the nit-picky problems right off the bat though lol |

Well, if you ever get the dealer to check it out, let me know what they say. Or I'll try to remember to mention it next time I take the car in.

I wonder if a good detailer might be able to polish the windshield scratch so it's less noticeable?
I have a couple of tiny chips, but between all the things that could end up imperfect with a windshield replacement, for now I'm picking the lesser of two evils. |

hilandscott, thanks for taking a closer listen. Please do update with what you hear. I noticed the whine very soon after driving away with the car on the first day. |

Mine too
The PS sound description is apt: I hear a bit of the noise at low speeds as well when listening for it.
No obvious pattern to it yet, somewhat intermittent but regular enough to notice... |

I think it may be a combination of belt and transmission whine. All N52's I've been in makes the same noise. Now, if it makes a really loud whine at a constant speed, take it in.

Glad I found this thread. 2012 128I here and I've also a bit of a whine at very low speeds. Most noticeable pulling to a stop just the last few feet. apparently normal.

kinda like this.....?..... http://o-o.preferred.iad23t01.v2.cac...s_redirect=yes My favorite track driving video of all time. Almost unreal! And the sounds make it so much more incredible as he makes his way around the Ring!

is it by any chance? i doubt our cars have a straight cut final drive though, even fully deadened.. it's possible though.. i mean, reverse is ALWAYS straight cut. |
