Coming from the STi, it's only 2.5 turn on the steering wheel
from lock to lock, what is it on the the 135?

Curios as well. The steering on the Evo is going to be tough to beat. 2 turns lock to lock and a 13:1 ratio.

I'm not sure I've seen what lock-to-lock is for the 135i (I also suspect the 128i has a 'slower' ratio). But I don't see how it would be more than about three turns lock-to-lock.

Power assisted rack and pinion steering doesn't need the huge diameter steering wheels and slow ratios that manual recirculating ball steering units needed, however.

As far as whether or not to get active steering, try both before deciding. Personally I don't want the extra fiddly bits that the active steering mechanism puts in the steering column.

exactly! that's why I didn't get it. my friend that has worked for BMW dealership bodyshop for 10 years says active steering is like driving a 7-series, easier to steer but feels totally disconnected from the car.

The 135i has available active steering. In parking lots, it wouldn't be more than 1.5 turns. The ratio gets pretty big.

A bit off topic, but has anyone seen the turning circle specs? I haven't seen any yet.

From what I have read the Active Steering system has been refined over the past few years and has been further refined specifically for the 1. I test drove a 2008 540i and liked it enough to order it on my 1. I can understand not wanting it on the track but the closest my 135i will ever get to the track is the S2S hwy to Whistler

Turning circle specs from the US press kit: 35.1 feet for both 128i and 135i. Sorry, but no numbers are listed for lock-to-lock rotations.

How so? Also most people advise against active steering.

It's not really fair to compare the STI and 1er in this way. STI is all wheel drive and will always have less front wheel steering range than a rear wheel drive car.

I wasn't really comparing the STi and the 1 - was using the STi more as an example.

AwesomeBMW - great find, both from C/D and the tootsie pop! hahah
