New to the forums! (with questions)

Hey guys

I'm new to the forums, just bought a 2009 135i (manual)M-package convertible with 18k miles with some cpo warranty left over. (pictures coming soon!)

A few questions and some back story...

I went from a mustang to a project miata.... I instantly fell in love with the level of involvement with the miata and wanted something slightly more practical as a daily... searched for a 128i but winded up getting a 135i because it was just too much of a good deal. (I'll let you know if it still is after my first service only time will tell)

My overall question is how do I increase my level involvement with this car??
please dont make fun of me but I miss reving the crap out of my car but with the 135i if I rev to 5k I'm already going 90+mph (exagerating off course)

1.I'm looking for a retro sounding exhaust not anything really loud, but cracking burbling would be great.. any mufflers that you guys could recommend to me?

2. Best short shift kit? I can barely tell the difference between 3rd and 5th..and I would like the action to be more rifle bolt like....
should I just get the bmw performance one so I do not void my warranty/destroy my tranny?

3. Best front license plate bracket? Cpe?

thanks for all of your input!!

Hello, welcome! Congrats on the new ride!

For starters, the N54 is the wrong engine to be winding out; it's not an N/A engine(obviously) and shouldn't be driven as such. The meat of the power band is between roughly 2000 rpm and 6000 rpm anyway.

1. For something "not loud" I'd probably say the BMW Performance Exhaust. While it's pricey, IMO it sounds perfect for someone looking to add a bit of sound and that ever-so-desired burble.

2. I happen to like the stock feel, so I have no experience with SSKs

3. I currently have the RHO-Plate and love its versatility. http://rhoplate.com/index.html

Welcome and congrats on your purchase. You will love your 135i. I'm on my second one and absolutely love the car.

As far as exhausts go, A lot of people love the BMW Performance exhaust. It's not obnoxiously loud and has a nice european tone to it imo.

If you add the BMW Performance power kit you will get a very sporty popping and crackling in engine overrun.

There are two versions of the BMW Performance power kit. Version 1, which is a software tune only, and version 2, which is the same software tune, plus some additional cooling hardware that is said to be necessary for track use and such only. Obviously, version 2 costs more.

The main purpose of the BMW Performance power kit is that it gives your car an additional 20 horsepower.

Here's a pretty good example of what the BMW Performance exhaust and the BMW Performance power kit sound like. This is not my car or my video, but belongs to another member. This car is a 135is, which comes standard with the BMW Performance exhaust and the BMW Performance power kit, version 2.

I can mirror the sentiments on the BMW performance exhaust. I have been daily driving my 135i with that exhaust for over 4 years now. Its got a nice burble and slight rasp but Its never too loud, even during highway travel.

I'm a big fan of the US Mill Works tow hook plate holder.

http://www.usmillworks.com/bmw_front..._tow_hook.html

I have the lightened one because it has more hole options.

I once had a guy run up to me in a parking lot, he said "what exhaust is that? I just spent 3K on my 135 and it doesn't sound nearly as good!". When I told him that it was basically an OEM+ system he was floored.

I have nothing but awesome things to say about the performance exhaust. I got mine in 2009 and the sound is still intoxicating.

OP where do you live? If its anywhere near NY I can show you how it sounds.

Replaced my clutch stop:

That's what was left! Previous owner wore some fancy pointy shoes I guess? Clipped it off?

Was wondering why I was getting cardio in every time I drove the thing!

I also came from a Miata, but mine was boosted with 250whp.

Love the switch to my 135i though. Get the BMW Performance short shift kit, I have it and love it. Paired with the BMS clutch stop, the feel is great. I hear that the BMW Performance exhaust and catless downpipes sound pretty good...

Love your miata!
Mine is hibernating for the winter and their is a lot I miss about it..
Although the 135i is more civilized...
I just miss the seating position...
The shifter! Oh the shifter...
The clutch...
And the "rawness"
But I'll turn my 135i into a monster just give me some time... And oh yah.. Money lol

I definitely get you on the "rawness" part. The Miata was very barebones compared to the 1-series. It was loud, bumpy, and rackety.

The shifter in my Miata was pretty tight with a short throw, which I really liked compared to any other car. However, the BMW Performance SSK really tightened things up the BMW. I drove my Miata after driving the BMW with the SSK and clutch stop, and definitely prefer the BMW's shifting now.

I had Bride Low Maxx seats in the Miata which were great. Loved how tight they held me in. The 1-series sport seats are great though for stock seats, plus they are very adjustable.

Overall, I love how reliable and stable the BMW feels. Go FBO and E85 and you'll never look back.
