Its the same for me N54 - but the 1 is a little cramped.

Had an Alfa with Selespeed (Fun)
Had a CLK (very refined smooth and sort of quick when it got going (7k revs)

Although the point and shoot is FUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN in the 1.

I have had in the past 3 series coupes and sedans for the past 20 years. Was in the market for a 335i vert when the dealer informed me of the upcomming 1er vert soon to be realeased.
I am 49 with adult kids so I downsized for the 1er. Purchased back in April 08 without even testdriving and only a view of the car at the Melbourne motor show.
Absolutely love the 1er. The only negative is the harsher ride compared to the 3 series, but that should change once the runcraps get replaced.

No. Would I trade up to the M3, in a heartbeat.
+1. Although the M3 is too big for me, I'm waiting for the M1, M badged 1, or whatever the heck BMW calls it.

I opted for the 1 due to two reasons.

1. the engine.
2. the rear end, I absolutely love that view of the car. I fell in love with it when I saw the tii concept at the tokyo motor show in 2007

IMO, BMW are taking the mick when it comes to pricing the 3 relative to the 1. As I said in my earlier post, the 335i coupe is 15% more expensive in Germany than the 135i coupe but 50% more here. OK, we have higher taxes here but the only real difference is the 33% luxury car tax so if you apply that to the 15% diffference in Germany the 335i should be 20% more over here - so it should be about $90k before on roads rather than $112k.

I do prefer the 1 to the 3 because:

Rarer than the 3
More unique, aggressive and modern take on older BMW designs than the 3 in my opinion
Here the biggest NA engine in the 3 is a 2.5L whereas the 1 has a 3.0L albeit ridiculously with a cheaper price and lower weight than the 3

I traded my e92 325i for a 135i coupe. They were priced roughly the same brand new, but the dealer seemed less willing to bargain with the 135i.

Being 6'4", I do miss the slightly (i mean slightly) plusher and more spacious interior however this is more than made up for by the additional power, nimbleness and overall sporty feel. it also came with the m sport pack as standard, an option which i opted out of in the 325i (as it was getting ridiculously expensive for a 2.5 litre).

The 135i is also quite a bit noisier in the cabin but significantly more fun to drive.

So yes I definitely prefer the 1 to the 3 at this price point.

However if youre comparing the 135i to the 335i and price isnt a consideration then Im not sure which way I'd go, but then again if price isnt a consideration, Id take an M3....or wuold that be an M1. Hmm I think Ive digressed to a topic belonging to a different thread.
