Driven at an average mileage of 12k miles that puts a 100k car at over 9yrs old. There are many things that need to be done with a car at that age; suspension, fuel lines, brake lines, along with engine mechanicals like water pumps, alternators, cooling system, AC, etc... Things deteriorate with time even if the engine is still running.
It's less of an issue if you've owned the car since new as you can keep with the maintenance over the years and you know what has and has not been done. But, buying someone else's over 100k car, especially 150k as one poster suggested, forget it.
You'll be sinking a lot of money into an old car just to get it where it needs to be.

For me the only car worth that effort is one that is classic and may one day be worth something. A 135i? Maybe, years from now.
But, to worry or be concerned about what a subsequent owner may need to deal with after 150k, I frankly don't care.
Anyone wanting to get a car with that many miles takes on whatever he finds, and he should expect to put a good bit of time and money in to it.

When I sold my 1990 Mits/Plymouth turbo, it was 10yrs old and had nearly 140k miles. The engine ran well, but the suspension needed a redo, full brakes including calipers and lines, the trans rebuild at 90k was done so a newer trans plus it's rebuild would be needed. Interior needed reconditioning, unless one likes the smell of an old car. All that plus an exterior that needed rust and some lower panel filling, along with a new paint job. Old cars a lot of work. It's more a labor of love.
if one needs inexpensive transportation, there are much better lower mileage and less costly alternatives.
If you owned a BMW for as many miles as I have, you would have a different opinion. No BMW since the 80s needs to have brake and gas lines replaced and I have never replaced an alternator or belt. Your right about the rest but add bushings to the list, urethane is good shit.

The 97 328is is at 222k with original auto, it needs a center bearing and new shocks. Now the girl wants a Z4 and I want to fix the 328. Guess who looses this battle? I have no problem buying 70-160k mile Z4, more miles the better to get the price down.

For those of you that change your oil every 5k or so; do you change your oil and schedule accordingly with your maintenance plan? What oil are you using?

Yep, 6.5k intervals. BMW 5w30 full synth. After warranty I may do 5k and try other LL4 oils. For WRX I would do every 5k.

Well, for the WRX I do the recommended 3,750 and I use Rotella T6 5w-40. Amazing oil.

She's getting sold hopefully this week or next.

Well at least one owner is is demonstrating a long life for this car. My concern is not about the HPFP or oil changes (you're wasting your money if you're changing synthetic oil at less than 10k), but it's whether there were lot's of elements in the car that are only expected to last 60-100k before requiring replacement. The end result would be regular $1500 bills once the car left warranty. My 318i ended up costing me about 3k a year in repairs after it passed 90k and that was at good indie shop. A BMW under warranty is a sweet deal, but out of warranty can be a rude surprise. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be especially true here.

I'd have to go through the file to get the details, but it was just a litany of hoses, seals and pumps failing. After I ordered my 1 it blew a cylinder and that was that. Had to borrow an old Jeep for about 3 weeks until the 1 arrived. I'm not complaining too much - I did get just over 175k miles on it. The body was still good and the interior was great (except for the very used driver seat). Still, it was pretty much the opposite of my first car which was a Honda. That was mechanically invicible, but interior got beat up and the body rusted out.

I covered 190k in my 123d coupe in just under three years, just changed it for a new X3. the first 100k I experianced no issues at all with the car but in the following 100-160K was very glad of the extended warrenty and BMW's cover. Initially compenents started to give up starting with the fuel pump then (about a month apart for each or 7-8k) small turbo, ERG valve, main turbo, alternator, rear suspention bush failure (drivers side) and cracked exhaust manifold. All a real pain but the biggest issue started with coolant use and after three monnths of back and forward to dealers resulted in the diagnosis of a cracked head and block so BMW put in a new engine and the last 30K had no further issues. All through the ownership the services were carried out as per the schedule no mods or special treatment. Despite the last year of regular breakdowns still a great car, fun to drive and 42mpg(euro).

Oil changes were mostly around the 15k mark and always synthetic oil. Couple of times I did extend to 20k purely through timings of services. Despite the cracked head and block I never had any oil contamination from the coolant all seemed to burn out through the exhaust.

Wow!! Nice work...you drive the hell out of your car!
I was just wondering....did you consider purchasing the extended warranty? I have seen it's around $2700 for 3 yrs / 100,000 miles (total). If I keep my car past 4 years I'm looking at that.....did you look at this?

Is there an official list on the recall on the HPFP? my car is an 08 with 63K miles but the dealer on Guam never brought in the 1 series and they might not know about the HPFP

Thanks,

Contact you dealer and if they claim ignorance, contact BMW North Amercia. You may never have a problem and they may not swap it out unless you do, but it wouldn't hurt to at least make sure you're covered by the 10yr/100k mile warranty.
