No, it won't be obsolete... BMW has known about the required changes for some time. There will be changes. The exact details are very sketchy. People are acting very strange, there is a lot of pressure to keep things quiet.

Not for the 3/5's that are US bound.

What do you think SPEED.............335 ???
Now THAT is intense! That would mean 530/540/550?!?! I'm going to have to see what I can find out. I have to admit that I haven't paid as much attention to the 5 series developments. I'll let you know what I find out.

I don't think BMW has ever had just a 3 year run with a model (at least not in recent, modern times). Changing a model after 3 years, will royally piss of buyers who just bought a 2006 5 Series (especially laying 65k+ on a 550i). I think BMW will keep the current 5 Series at least 2 more years. It is still winning reviews and awards!
It's OK man... BMW always does a mid-life refresh. This seems to be a little early, but not by much.

Do you think they are launching the USA only N51 engine early as seen on the doc that first showed us the N52 ???

Your date of June 2006 for the couple also fits in perfectly for the N53 on this 2003 document

I think blaming the change on CA is too convenient. I think there is more to it then that. I don't believe the law requires compliance until much later this year. What ever we find out about the 5 series in the next 45 days will tell us a lot. Quite possibly... it will tell us everything. :rocks:

I'm still skeptical about the N51... and whether or not we will still get it as originally planned.

Easy dead... not so fast. It's never good to pull things out of context from a post or an entire thread. So far my position in that thread is still right on the money. We will see as things finally unfold this year how accurate everyone's sources turn out to be.

You're welcome... and yes, there will be a 335Ci when the coupe starts production in June.

SpeedFrek, are you saying that there will be a 330i in addition to the 335i in 200? It is because I will wait for the 335i if they are going to drop the 330i in the mid-year of 2006, else I am going to order my 330i soon.

So SPEED, this is what I am thinking.
You let me know !

The Audi lineup:
A4 - 3.2l V6(255h.p.)
S4 - 4.2l V8(340h.p.) Bridging a gap
RS4 - 4.2l V8(414h.p.)
A6 - 4.2l V8(335h.p.)
A8 - 4.2l V8(335h.p.)
Q7 - 4.2l V8(350h.p.)

Same 4.2 liter V8 tuned differently per application.

In comparison my BMW prediction:
330 - 3.0l I6(255h.p.)
340 - 4.0l V8(3??h.p.) Bridging a gap (335)
M3 - 4.0l V8 (4??h.p.)
540 - 4.0l V8(306h.p.) currently in Europe
740 - 4.0l V8(306h.p.) currently in Europe

This 4000cc Magnesium and alloy composite, Double-VANOS V8 is the same V8 projected for the upcoming M3, tuned differently per application. A good way to make a new engine design
worth the cost of development. So if we are not getting a turbo 335, (I do not believe that are) then what are we getting ???

I heard years ago from a GSM that had attended a BMW Center meeting with BMW NA that they wanted an upscale 3-Series with a V8.

Just food for thought.

I can't wait for more information... this should be the greatest year in BMW's history... and we are right in the middle of it!
I bet the new 5 series will have similar taillights to the E90 and new 7 series. They both have the horizontal bands and you can see the resemblance between the E90 and the new 7 series. The new generation is starting to take shape.

An upscale 3 series with a larger engine would be a 5 series. A sportier 3 series with a larger engine (V8) would be an M3. The 335 will have a larger (or more powerful) engine than the 330 but it won’t be any more luxurious/upscale.

WOW, gone a week and all hell break loose

I've heard rumors for several months about a V8 3 series floating around Detroit.. as mentioned elsewhere.

Next Friday is the "Black Tie" affair at the NAIAS... A chance to yet again rub elbows with CEO's and Chairmen of the auto industry. BMW always has someone of relative importance at the show.

Now all I need is some sound tact and i'll have all the info we need by the 15th.

but, as i was saying here and elsewhere (argueably) the 3 series will indeed have:

325
330
335
///M

If the M3 will have a Formula1 based V8 derives somewhat from the M5's V10 it will be a costly engine unless they can use the block for larger production runs such as a shorter stroke version (smaller liter) and stick it in a V8 powered 3 series.

I guess speculations will run high for the next month or so... we'll see !!

Only a messenger. Also, as I stated this info was from a few years ago.

Word is that they are ahead of schedule and that it could be as early as March '07 or as late as Sept.'07... that's as good as I can do right now. Personally... I think June'06 would be the earliest. With the pressure from AMG and Audi, though, you can bet money that it will be as soon as possible. :rocks:

Because the M3 will have essentially the same engine as the M5/M6... the development period is moving along very quickly.

There is a well known fact that M3 celebrates 20th anniversary 2006. Therefore BMW are preparing a M3 Coupe Concept which is expected to be shown in Geneva. In the worst scenario Concept will appear on "M3 family photos" only.

There are some indications M3 could come already in 2006 (German market!), since production of current M3 ends this Summer.
