Yeah it's a well known issue. Why BMW decided to fit a plastic pipe with such a ridiculous method of attachment to the intake is beyond me

So, a bit of an update. After a tense stand-off, BMW Israel have agreed to change the charge-pipe free of charge as a "sign of good will". I had planned to replace it, but will instead buy the part and wait for the inevitable.
Thanks everyone for your help! |

Sorry to bring this alive..
But my car is having the same issue. I told the dealer not to fix it and the car is siting at my driveway until its fixed. Dealer said there were some boost pressure faults and further inspection found Charge Pipe to throttle body LEAKING. So, to fix the issue dealer told me to replace. What does LEAKING means here? Could it be just loose? or should it really need to be replaced? Dealer never said it was broken. Dealer didn't give me more details as it got pissed because I didn't fix it there. Thanks, Francisco

If it is leaking, it is cracked. It is a common known issue.
If you use the car on the track or for autocross, you should just replace it with an aftermarket one to prevent another failure which could ruin an otherwise great day. If you are under warranty, and you only use the car for daily driving, let the dealer replace it.

The appendage " sound pipe " on the OEM unit is a ridiculous little pipe that puts sound toward the cabin. Quote:
Agree 1 million percent with @carjunkie. RealOem Indicates dealer part is $184 ER chargepipe is less than $100 more and won't fail again. |

If I replace with an aftermarket part, will it discontinue the extended warranty to the turbos?

It shouldn't, the part functions exactly the same and nothing to increase load on the turbos. It is well documented that replacing the stock piece with an aftermarket part is necessary for reliability.
FWIW, I had my injectors replaced at my dealer under the injector-specific extended warranty with all of the mods in my sig on the car, dealer was fully aware.

kookieshk it IS safe to drive your car. I wouldn't be driving it cross country... but if it is needed for BASIC transportation you should be just fine simply driving with part throttle. Both times that mine has failed has been on a track or autocross course about 75 miles from home and in both situations i was fine driving the car home.. Tipping into the throttle too much at any time would cause a check engine sign to glow in the center square but it does not stay if one is driving lightly. I have a friend who had this happen on track at circuit of the Americas in Austin and he had no issues after limping the car home approx. 250 miles. if possible.. check the condition of the charge pipe and see if it is blown open massively or just compromised. in my case... it seems to have failed and nearly sealed back up. NO possibility of FOD Hehehe... yep.. 6 years with a crappy part is enough. Based on the amount of autocross and track events I have done with my car.. I am actually surprised how well the OE piece held up, getting 3 years from the first. I had the first replaced under warranty.. and since and because my car has seen lots of autocross and track time I wanted to leave it all stock so no hassles at the stealer. Inevitably. replacing with the free part from warranty just delayed the expense another 3 years. Quote:

there is no performance modification from the charge pipe alone other than ensuring factory operation longer than the OE designed part. Owners of 1M with performance mods generally SEEK this part early on to assist in basic reliability because the modifications they do (increased boost) simply cause a drastically reduced lifespan of the OE part. Whether done to prevent a future failure or simply replacement after it fails... ALL Owners of 1M should replace the stock part with a more durable replacement than the OE part when it fails. It is THE WEAKEST LINK. Goodbye! Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 08-28-2017 at 01:02 PM.. |

The plastic/rubber charge pipe seems to be a deliberately designed device that will show the telltale increase of BOOST which is commonly done via an Aftermarket tune. If the owner uses a tune or some other method to increase boost, the charge pipe fails as the weakest part of the system. It does so in a fashion that still 1- leaves the vehicle driveable (albeit at reduced speed) after a failure. 2- provides a 'tell ' to the dealer if the customer repeatedly destroys the OEM part and requests it to be replaced. 3- permits the vehicle to still be easily be modified by aftermarket devices for those unconcerned about warranty |
