UPDATE:

In order to start this project I wanted to bring my car in and talk to a BMW tech (about the VO programming)... I also wanted to install an ALARM on my car. I bought an OEM alarm ONLINE for $183.51 Free Shipping and installed it. Then called around to all the BMW dealerships in the area basically "feeling" out the service departments to see who would not only be interested in programming the easy ALARM retrofit also who could help me with this OEM IDrive retrofit. I also based my selection on the Google Maps Reviews people left for the dealerships. I picked the best called and told them about the Alarm I need programmed and they said it would be $145 and could get in me in tomorrow morning at 8:00Am (I knew I could find a cheaper rate but I liked that I could get it done the next day).

So I arrived at 7:45 and immediately was greeted by the Service Manager and they took my car in and introduced me to the tech. I talked with the Tech and I started telling her about the OEM I-drive retrofit.. I showed her booster's retrofit.pdf and she told me they would help me with the programming, which is great. Then I went over to the parts department while she finished my alarm.

Here are the parts I talked with the parts manager about.

Controller 65-82-9-189-048 $354.41
Ventilation Tube 64-11-6-928-875 $29.84
Trip Panel 51-45-9-158-352 $707.31
65-82-9-193-751 <----- I think this is the monitor display
Connecting Wiring 61-11-9-185-171 $79.51
Connecting Wiring61-12-6-935-686 $34.88
HANDS FREE TELEPHONE MICROPHONE84-31-6-938-762 $57.38
LOUDSPEAKER 65-13-6-938-657 $35.47
CAR INFOTAINMENT COMPUTER 65-12-9-199-907 $985.02 + CORE DEPOSIT $500.00

The big hold up is the monitor they can't even order it yet, apparently its still unavailable for parts? Can any one verify this?

So $2783.81 Not including the price of the monitor and not including programming (which they charged me 145$ to program my alarm.)

Also what does CORE DEPOSIT mean? $500 extra charge?

"Core means that you must turn in the old component for them to recycle it. Usually that means they charge you a deposit on the piece when you buy it, and return that deposit when you bring back the old part." What if I don't have an old part? Any way's to get around the core deposit?

Core Deposit sounds like a crap charge but it also may make the parts cheaper. (think about it, almost all the parts you listed usually are ordered to replace a broken part)

I would talk with Dan and see if he can get you prices for the parts without the Core Deposit.

Guys in this case, I'm thinking BMW will not cover defective parts under a non-authorized install... I could be wrong, best to check with your service department.

I had an e-mail about this retrofit earlier, and this is what I came up with as a list of parts that you'll need:

- New Dashboard
- New iDrive Control
- New iDrive Center Consol Piece
- New CCC
- New CID
- New Vent Host for CCC / CID
- New iDrive Control Knob

Cores will be non-refundable since they are non-warranty Cores

Prices vary as to whether you want to do a 2008 or 2009 retrofit. There is some website that I found on Bimmerfest long ago about retrofitting for a reasonable cost, but I can't find the link at this time

That's true if it's dealer installed, but this is the DIY area so I was thinking people will be doig the DIY.. thus proceed with caution

I can't wait to see how this goes.

I'm guessing it will be easier for me because I already have the 08 idrive.

Dan- I'm very interested in seeing what the pricing is like to go from the 08 idrive to the 09 idrive.

I have a feeling it would be an easier install also.

Do you think ANY service dept would take this kind of thing on?

FYI: the new iDrive controller works plug 'n play (plugs into existing connector and all the buttons work) into the old iDrive system: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224629

This applies to the 1 Series as well, as the old iDrive components are exactly the same as in the 3 Series.

I'm curious as well, as I would want to add an 09 idrive to a non-idrive 08

Are you sure this will work on the 1? I've got the 2008 idrive and would totally retrofit the controller if I knew that it would work.
