Sunroof works with engine off

My E90 (took delivery 3/23/06) sunroof doesn't work unless the ignition is on. But, my car is in the shop right now (for BMW Assist "data error" issue), and on my loaner car, which was made a few months later than my car, the sunroof works after you turn off the engine, and even when you take the key out (ignition is certainly off by that time.) Weird. I thought all our sunroofs didn't work like that.

Anyone who just picked up their car...can your sunroof do this?

Here sunroof works if you put the key in and press the start button without starting the engine ( not pressing brake in Auto or clutch in Manual, the mode where radio ect works ).
This is the same as turning the key to the 2nd position in a car with normal keys.

It also works for a short period after removing the key if the engine was running, so you can close it if you forgot it open after switching the car off.

In both my cars (5/05 and 9/05 builds) the key must be in and the car must be in "ready" mode. It's a PITA when I forget to close the roof and shut off the car, because if you hit "stop" to turn off the ignition you have to remove the key, then reinsert the key and push start w/o the brake (ready mode) to close it.

Our '98 E39 528i will operate the sunroof with the key off, which is something we really like.
Our '02 E46 M3 will not operate the sunroof with the key off.
Our '04 E60 545i will not operate the sunroof with the key off.
Our '06 E90 330xi (late April build) will be delivered next week. Will let you know.

The timing is very funny for this post....since I was thinking the same thing...

My car was built on 1/16/06 an my sunroof or windows will not close or open once I hit the stop button...it is such a pain to have to start the car again every time......

My friends Jet Black E90..you may have seen our pics.....was built on 3/5/06...and when I was in it the other day to my amazement his sunroof and windows OPEN and CLOSE when the engine is off...thats right once he hits the stop button his sunroof and windows will still operate untill one of the front doors is opened.....

My thoughts were that maybe I need to change something in my settings or he has a later software version on his car....both cars are 325i's w. sport pkg....

Does anyone else have anymore info on this...if it is a simple do it yourself setting thats great....I hope I dont have to take it to the dealer for this.....

So, it would seem that BMW does listen to and act on our complaints.

Good for you latecomers , but bad for us beta-testers!

I also hope that this would be a simple software update.

I plan to ask my dealer about it Monday (since I'm already in the shop). They are replacing my control unit for my BMW assist issue, and presumably it will have the latest software version (they were trying to fix my BMW assist issue by updating to the latest software but the control unit kept crashing. so they ordered a replacement.).

I'll post what I find out from the svc dept. and will report if this now works when I get my car back.

With comfort access, you can just step out of the car, notice the sunroof is open, and press-and-hold the little lock fingerpad on the door handle. It closes the sunroof, windows, and retracts the mirrors.

Hmm...my windows work after the engine is off, only the sunroof doesn't. It's very inconvenient.

Yep same here (built 9/2006). If I'm not mistaken if you don't have CA and use the actual key in the car door, then you can get the sunroof and the windows to cloose when you are outside the car. I know that worked in the E46.

That still works in the E90....and it is actually something I started doing instead of starting the engine back up again......

Another Comfort Access Benefit

I guess you can add that to the list of Comfort Access benefits, though I agree unnecessary to be available just with CA. With engine off and "powered down" both the windows and sunroof will open or close until a door is open with CA. Can't figure why windows only without CA. My E91 is a 3/06 build.

I was uncertain about CA but after 1 month I'm very happy I got it and this is one major reason.

dencoop, that's a good idea. I thought about that but guess I'm too lazy to take out the little embedded key from the fob. But maybe next time I'll try that.

we'll see what the car does with the new control unit later this week when I pick it up

got my car back from the dealer with new control unit and the latest software. sunroof behavior unchanged -- works only with ignition on. I didn't pursue the matter it's not that big a deal. I just close the sunroof as I'm approaching the garage.

How to make sunroof work when ignition off

Here's the deal on the sunroof working with the ignition off: My E90 325xi was built the week of February 6, 2006. Minor improvements went into effect that week of production, including a redesigned head rest to meet Insurance Highway Safety Institute safety criteria, new downhill decent light on the dash when activated, AND the ability to open and close the sunroof with the ignition off. Here's how to do it: Insert key fob, press start/stop button once to turn on accessories, and then open sunroof. I did quite a bit of research to find out the improvements that went into effect this week of production. So, those with cars built before probably cannot do this, but those built after can.
