What's In My ECU Box?!

Long story short, I take the car in on Monday for HPFP issues, get it back Friday after new HPFP ( 934 I believe ) and new software.

Get home, pop the hood straight away for some JB3 reinstall, and I find a new, little black box. I feel crazy, cuz I don't remember that being there the last...5 times I've gone into the ECU box.

What the hell is it?

The arrows show the wires going into the box, and the square is around it.

Yes exactly. I'm surprised that pic ( which seems to be from the ECU removal walkthrough ) has the little box because mine did not. I looked over the BMW Parts list from my maintenance and there is a sensor, the HPFP, and some nuts and bolts. Nothing about the box.

Someone's gotta know!

Maybe I just didn't notice it before as well, too lazy to go out and check again though. I'm sure if BMW didn't put it on the work order they didn't do anything they wouldn't want you to know about.

Well if a lot of people have it, and still have the JB3 without issue, I dont think there should be a problem and I'll just re-install.

That still doesnt answer a) What it is? b) Why its been added now?

Shady is right...

Why don't you remove that relay... read and record the BMW part number... then put it into REALoem and see what comes up in the search? Or call a dealer and ask.

Didn't know about this realOEM thing. Definately an option, I'll take a look later today.

yes, there is a search engine at the top left of the page, once you click on the ENTER button. Don't enter your car model info... just type in the part nunber in that top left window.

Judging by the size and number of wires coming in (two large ones and two small ones) it's some sort of power control relay. You'd be hard pressed to consume that much power in a module that small if it were something other than a relay without having some visible heat sinks.

I doubt very seriously that this was retrofitted by the dealer during a service trip.
I'd say it's more likely that it's always been there and you just didn't notice it under all the wires.

From RealOEM:
