Keys locked in boot

Had a long unnecessary day of driving today. Went into Launceston this morning to run some errands (140km drive one way) and get the stone chip on my windscreen repaired. After my second errand locked my keys in the boot

Rang BMW assist and they basically said there is no way roadside assist can open the car. It had to be towed to the dealer and a key ordered. Only way they could get it quickly was to smash the window. As this wasn't an option I was remotely ever going to entertain, I decided to hire a car and drive home to get my spare key.

So what was going to be a simple trip to town turned out to be a long waste of time day with 560km of driving, AND I didn't get my chipped windscreen fixed as I ran out of time.

Moral of the story: Do not use the boot unlock button to open the boot to load stuff unless you are absolutely certain you are not going to put your keys in the boot and close it. From now on I am always going to use to door unlock button and open the boot manually.

Post note: BMW paid for the Avis rental car:w00t:

I've done that twice with my existing wheels. The 2nd time I was about half a second too late as I shut the damned thing. I didn't have to drive 560km though to get the spare key (I did have to climb a 7' gate though, to get in the house).

Nice of BMW to pick up the car rental fee though, good one!

I'll be testing the Comfort Access fob with this though, supposed to not be possible

With CA, if you shut the trunk with the keys in there, it will pop back open. I tested it and it works.

I always accidently lock (or unlock for that matter) my CA fob in the trunk because I keep the key in my briefcase. Never stays locked thank god.

Yes as I was standing beside my car contemplating my navel and waiting for a return phone call from BMW, I though: "If only I had comfort access".....

Nevermind, lesson learnt, use door unlock and open boot manually from now on.

Had to drive back home in the dark thru the wildlife infested section of the highway last night, and I followed a semi trailer all the way at 80kph - just in case:wink:

Thanks Way. I'm usually quite philosophical about these things, so I was kind of laughing at myself at the time already. Kind of.....

You learn from your mistakes. When you don't, then that is it's time to beat yourself up

Thats just bad luck buddy..

I locked mine in the boot the first week I got the car, went upstairs to get the spare key before even thinking...hey...I had CA..
Left the keys in my coat pocket and through it in the boot...easyily done mate..

I have done it a few times since then... With CA the key is never in your hands, so during the colder months it is in my coat pocket and i am forever throwing it in the boot..

I had heard that some things can block the CA detection fairly easily. E.g. having a laptop on top of the keys in the boot.

It was on a 5 series I think.

Anybody feel like trying it out? (having the spare handy of course!)

Keys

Two weeks ago I lost the keys for our Lexus. The problem was this happened at Falls Creek and the spare keys were with my wife who had left that morning to fly back to Brisbane.

Lexus subcontracted to RACV to try and open the car so I could get my gear out. The RACV guy could not get into the car which I guess is good in a way. Lexus said the best they could offer was to get someone to drive up from Melbourne to fit and program a new key. Cost.........$2400 including expenses. WTF?????

End result was the wife was still at Mascot awaiting a connection to Brisbane. She cancelled and flew back to Albury where we had someone else go pick her up. Very inconvenient but only cost us the extra airfare and a slightly more crowded drive home (5 in the car instead of 4).

Lesson learned - losing keys on a modern car with microchip encoding and good security is VERY EXPENSIVE and VERY INCONVENIENT. I hope never to do it again.

Maybe my keys will turn up after the snow melts?

Yes agree. Dealer told me impossible to get into car without breaking window or waiting for a new key to be made up.

One option that wasn't tried was to insert a long stiff wire through the window seal to push the door unlock button on the dashboard.

I did this on my old Disco when my keys were locked in the car with the engine still running. There was a bit of paint loss on the window frame in the process, but I had no option as I was in Normanton in the Gulf of Carpentaria, a long long way from the nearest Land Rover Dealer.

Just tried it. FYI, unlock button is disabled when doors are locked, so this is not going to work.

I put my key fob (with minimal keys - house and that's it) in my jeans pocket. That way I'm less likely to throw it in the boot if I had put them in a jacket. But then again I have CA.
