the 83-22-0-406-941 is MTF-LT2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! they billed a qty of 4 of this stuff, and it appears to be in a 1/2 liter size which would equal 2 liters...... which would equal approx the amount needed for a manual trans. They have incorrectly filled your trans.... I think you are going to be in wildbills situiation !!!!! sorry it took so long... it wasent easy to hve the numbers broken down from bulk size !!!

I had my 1200 mile service performed on 5/23. The invoice mentions motor oil, filter and 1/2 liter of 83-22-0-406-941. There is no mention of transmission fluid.
I called the dealer this morning. My service advisor says they did the oil change and diff fluid change but did not change the transmission fluid. This is at the same dealer that did a transmission fluid change for Wild Bill. The SA says he assigned my car to their best tech and that tech must have known something was up. I think I am lucky. I just hope they are telling me the whole truth. If they are I would recommend Wild Bill use the same SA and hopefully he will become their resident 1M expert. Does anyone know what that other fluid is. I looked it up on Real OEM without success. |

and if they put this stuff in your diff, its the wrong fluid also !!!! so someone is not telling the whole truth here.. the correct fluid for 1M lsd diffs is 83-22-1-467-993 qty of 2 or 3 depending on spilage I think you need to call them back .... EDIT : dont get me wrong....what is billed on RO may not have been put in your car, and the master tech, in fact grabbed the correct stuff, but the parts guy mis-billed, but you have to ask.

So... the 1M uses 2L of MTL-LT5 trans oil and 1.2L of rear diff oil.
Do we know what type of diff oil? Is it Castrol SAF-XJ, which is: SAE 75W140 GL5 BMW LS Castrol SAF-XJ, is the same diff oil spec'd for the M3 diff. Last edited by Dackelone; 08-04-2011 at 04:16 AM.. |

It appears that dealers prior to the bulletin were relying on the "its the same transmission as in XXXXX" theory and are incorrectly putting in LT-2 and LT-3. Theses two fluids are for prior years / specifications..
In defense of some dealers, BMW is notorious for releasing a new vehicle and not have any parts for it available, that includes fluids.. It happens... BTW the BULK part number for MTF-LT5 will be 83-22-2-167-666 >>>> BUT THIS MAY CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT NUMBER WHEN IT IS BROKEN DOWN INTO LITERS / QUARTS ( BMW ships in bulk and then creates new numbers for "quantity" sake. ) as far as i know and told no fluid is able to be ordered at this time. I hope this helps....

This is how BMW AG sells the fluid over here too. In Bulk. BMW AG sells the dealer a big drum of the oil... and then they pour the oil into jugs. When I bought my MTF-LT4 trans oil from my local BMW Zentrum... they gave me an old BMW jug and sold me 2.5L of oil. Look at my big 5L jug in my DIY and you can see the jug: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...castrol+saf-xj Btw... my dealer told me that the trans & diff oils are sold in three sizes: 60L, 600L or 6,000L quanities. The first two come in metal barrels, the last one comes via a TRUCK to the dealer over here! No joke! Also... this was why I bought my rear diff oil from my indi parts store.... bc my dealer did not have the rear diff oil on hand in barrels and I did not want to buy a 60L barrel! So I bought some Castrol 1/2L bottles from Stahlgrube, my indi part store. Dackel |

Tow truck is on the way. Once again this forum is more reliable than the dealer.
DriveHard, thanks for tracking down all the numbers. Now I have to decide. I am scheduled to go to a BMWCCA Driving School tomorrow. Should I go and take the dealer loaner? |

Thank you, at least I know now.
I called them early this morning, I called them later in the day regarding another non-related matter (State inspection) and the Service Advisor indicated the Service Manager was still looking into it ... the end of the day came and went and I still didn't hear back ... my patience is not so great ... so, I have to wait yet another night (at least) to find out what they are going to do ... on top of not sleeping well last night after reading this thread for the first time. Perhaps tomorrow I will get some resolve to this .... Thanks again, DriveHard. Quote:
