I think people misunderstood and assumed this was a new car that the OP was picking up. If that was the case, I wouldn't accept it either.
It's someone's personal, used car...and it's definitely not bad enough to be totaled.

I know, I'm not sure why people are assuming that.

Exactly. Looks bad at first glance only because a few panels are off the car. In those couple of images, however, there doesn't appear to be any structural damage whatsoever. Probably just scratched and dented panels. Looks nowhere near "totalled."

Still, BMW does go to great pains advertising the impact-absorbing ability of the 135's body panels. Whether panels are crushed in place or knocked clean off the car, the resulting gruesome appearances will be deceiving since one of their "jobs" is to sacrifice themselves to protect the car's vital innards (which are, by comparison, not so easily or cheaply replaced).

Hey I just thought I'd clear up that this is not actually my car... I saw it when I went in to pick up my other BMW.
I'm not too sure what the extent of damage actually was but I know that this particular workshop is reluctant to do panel beating as most of the time it works out cheaper to order new body panels, spray them, data dot them, and fit them. From what I understood, the workshop told me that heavy equipment fell off the back of a truck whilst the 135i was following it on the highway and the 135i didn't have enough time to move and it caused damage to the body of the car. He said that the damage was quite serious and some of the panels had been torn apart but it was mainly cosmetic. I hope this helps. |

I'll bet the sensation was kind of like sitting in doctor's waiting room while another patient gets wheeled out on a gurney covered with a sheet.
