Afe intake scoops and BMS filter - worth it
Hi all, just wanted to share that the other day I received my afe intake scoops from Turner to add to the BMS intake I put in a few days earlier.
Installation only took 5 minutes and was super easy. They even provide you with the torx bit to undo the snorkels. After driving around with it for a few days I am very happy with the results. Throttle response seems to be better, the exhaust sounds beefier, and performance has generally improved. Note that the only other intake mod I have was replacing the OEM filter with a BMS drop in filter. The exhaust is stock. Definitely a thumbs up for this simple mod combo.

There are other positive outcomes than a performance gain.

With any modifications around the air intake I'd love to see dyno sheets before and after. It's such a contentious area and very low in hard data.

I was thinking about those "scoops" the other day as I was changing out my air filter for a new Mahle (paper) one. I know I changed it early but I wanted too.
What got me thinking about those "scoops" was in my air box there was quite a few small stones and sand in there! The factory box has some places where the purposely designed little nooks and crannies for debris to get stopped inside of the air box. I would hate to be running a more pourous gauze filter (K&N and the like) that would let those stones and sand into my engine! And when you have some scoops... how much more sand will get sucked up into there! Just a thought! |

Unfortunately no dyno data Kenny, however the butt dyno gave me a good reading. Considering the whole lot only cost about $200 in total, regardless of real dyno numbers, I feel it was definitely worth it.

In my experience, and those of many, the factory airbox and intake setup is actually the 'best' setup in terms of efficiency & gain. Unless you are planning on doing stupid things to your car (e.g. doubling/tripling the power), most air intake modifications produce hardly any gains (if any)
Don't be sold on the 'better filtration', 'higher flowing' advertising on the websites / boxes - it is there for a reason Paper filters from factory have time and time again proven to be very effective & the most bang-for-buck. The scoops on the other hand, I can see as a real benefit as any form of ducting that improves air flow, cooling is a good thing - your engine will love the more efficient flow of fresh air and gain from it. Re seat of the pants dyno, just make sure it's not the placebo effect taking over...

Just for clarity, air box is factory, only the filter was changed...

Sorry to be an ass - it should have very little effect on directing rain into your intake

I have these scoops and I've driven in the rain plenty without issue. Quite sure they do nothing at all, but if you paint them a shiny colour they look awesome peeking out from behind some black performance kidney grills. If you drive through a massive puddle that throws copious amounts of water up your intake snorkel then I doubt the scoops are going to make much difference either. Hydrolock is hydrolock.
