Extended Warranty - New "High Water Mark"

As some of you would be aware, I've had a pretty lengthy sequence if mechanical issues with my '09 e82. Most recently (this week), another failed injector - which is now fixed, and all seems OK again.

However, I run out of warranty next month, and given the number and cost of the repairs to date, I'm concerned that the trend will continue, I'm going to be paying for it myself.

So as a potential solution, I asked my dealer about the extended warranty. And he was more than happy to give me the costs ........

12 months --- $4,914
24 months --- $5,796
36 months --- $6,875

Like me, I'm sure you'll all be surprised that he tells me they haven't sold a lot of these. One can only assume that BMW owners don't see extortion as a good business model --- go figure!!!!

Has anyone been able to get a half-decent figure for the extended warranty?

get a small piece of paper and write down the cost of hpfp, injectors, coils etal and then ask yourself whats the total for an indie to do the work as opposed to the bmw price. Im more than happy to run the gauntlet

for example I just got pete from advan to replace the drivers front wheel bearing, bmw for part alone was 600+ pete could get the part from the uk for under 200.

Without getting tough the quote I got was under $2K for 24 months from memory. I decided against any form of extended warranty along the lines of what Paul said in a post above.

Keny, they would never cover you

I can just see the warranty claim. Kenny drives into BMW service centre, technician opens bonnet and says hey whats this shiny pipe doing there and whats that extra fuel line for? Then opens boot and says hey I don't recall that fancy tank being a BMW OEM option

That would be one entertaining moment

Porsche charge 2k per year for as many years as you want. And that is expensive.
BMW has to be well under that mark.

Mind you extended warranties are just an insurance policy, so somehow they have identified you as uninsurable.
Perhaps on the trended costs to date?
Certainly sounds like a strategy to get you to buy a new one.
I can't see how it would make you loyal to the brand though.

I hadn't though of it that way - but it does make sense. My car must have cost them close to $10K in parts, to date.

It wouldn't be a problem if they made a car that didn't break all the damn time.

If that's the way the conversation goes, this could be my 8th and last BMW. Benz & Audi make a fine product, and I'm sure I can find something that'll meet my needs. I'm happy to consider a new car if they want to make the pricing attractive - that'd make both of us happy.

I paid around $2.5k for 2yr on my F10, so can't see why an E82 would cost more than double. Did you get a quote from another dealer?

Also, I once had an Audi TT - it spent more time in the service centre than the road. When the warranty lapsed I was quoted outrageous amounts for extension, so I decided to trade it in. They offered me peanuts for it - I sold it privately and never bought an Audi since (after owning 3 in a row).

In the other thread on this I paid $3118 for 36mths/75k

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=614262

I had the roof and HPFP and tail lights done under warranty. We also bought the car when it was 18mths old. So perhaps things we done before we got it.

It saddens me that you have to pay for a decent warranty on BMWs but you can go and buy a Kiaundai and get a million years and unlimited k's included in the purchase price.

Back on topic though, have you thought about going to a non-BMW extended warranty?

Porsche cover everything no questions asked though it's just drive in and come back when it's ready to be picked up. Cars ARE covered for track use which is where the water gets murky with BMW.

I hear you on the Kiaundai thing (aren't Holden and Ford doing more years / more kms warranty these days?) -- says something about either confidence in the product, or attitude towards paying customers and perceived value, or both.

Re non-BMW warranty, the BMW extended warranty is only an Allianz insurance policy anyway. It used to be sold as such, but they seem to have branded it their own. The dealer showed me the price difference (not very much), and commented that they aren't allowed to sell the Allianz policy any longer, due to the BMW version being more complete "in some areas".

I may give Allianz a call and see what that brings.......

I have both PDS's and there is essentially no difference at all. Apart from the BM policy being more expensive.

Paul, of course they would sell me an extended warranty. If I had cause to make a claim they might enter into a discussion about refusing the claim if a modification that I've made was related to the claim.

I've had my car services at BMW a few times and I drive it in exactly as is. They couldn't care less, other than asking a few questions about mods out of interest.

I had the same conversation with the MB guys when I looked at a ML350

They added 20% to the Allianz policy and changed the front cover.
For the extra 20% they said they would be the person to ring Allianz and would know how to get the claim approved, as to when you have to ring them yourself and you might tell them something that lets them reject the claim.

You have to weigh up:
1. Is that true
2. Is it worth it if it is

Good luck.

Allianz don't offer this directly, only through brokers or dealerships.

I can only assume this means a "reseller" can add any margin they like.
