If it's white or any non-metallic surely $78 or less is possible.

Hope so!

The local dealer did call me today to ask how I was going and if I'd made a decision. I asked him to drop the price but he said that was as low as they could go.

We'll see how i go with interstate dealers.

I was initially thinking of picking up a Z4 35i but as I rarely do much driving anymore i think the extra $$ would be a bit of a waste (even though it is certainly a great car). I really didnt want to do another 1er but I really dont need a larger car - my car before last was a sedan and I hated the wasted extra space I was carting around.

So I think I will just pick up a used 135i though I am really unsure what to look for. Some of the things that i am taking into account:

- Wouldnt be modding it too much - just a piggyback to start with and see how we go - does jb/procede get similar results with N55 as with the N54? If so I can handle getting the newer engine/car.

- the main page of these forums states that the f22 will be revealed in mid-2012, so I assume released late 2012/early 2013, so the e82 will be a runout model soon? Dont want to pay ~$60 now for a 2nd hand 135i when the dealers might be pushing out new with warranty for not much more.

- N55 became standard around september 2009, is that correct?

- I am used to the steptronic but is the DCT an improvement?

- Is getting one that is still under warranty a must - considering all the issues that people have had. Was thinking of going to the dealers and offering private sale prices and see how I go.

Thanks for any advice.

N55 with equiavelent mods will always give less power... hence tuned n55 < tuned n54...
I'd suggest N54 for this fact.

Some people like the DCT but after driving one back to back with my auto I would choose my auto because of:
- no low speed jerkyness
- brilliantly smooth
- still has very quick changes
- proven/reliable/less worrying about cluthes going down the track etc.

So in my mind, it's not really much of an improvement.

As for warranty, things like the fuel pump tend to be covered anyway if the car is out of warranty, so whilst it's nice for peace of mind, I don't think it would be a deal breaker...

Drawn05, there's afew good used 135is for sale at the moment, personally I think Ian's car is a steal. Stuart also has posted a silver one if you're looking for a N54 which is unbelievably cheap. Oh there's mine too

In terms of warranty, I haven't heard anyone forking out big bucks for repairs yet, as said main concern would be the HPFP. I've read that the DCT tranny is great but could have some issues. The steptronic is also fantastic and close to bullet proof.

Yeah, I have seen the ones for sale on here - but I havent done enough research to work out what I want exactly.

So is the difference between the gains of similar mods on N54 or N55 drastic or are they mildy insignificant?

If the same mods yeild 230rwkw on a N54 for example, but only 220-225rwkw on a N55, I wouldnt mind too much.

I think we would be talking in terms of the power potential of FBO cars.

Also N54 can get upgraded turbo as well.

ps. I hope my exhaust arrived safely!

I think you should take both N54 and N55 for a spin first. On paper the N54 has better capabilities if you decide to tune and modify it, however I think the N55 feels stronger despite its lower numbers.

No engines better, don't let the numbers pull you off so buy the one that suits your liking and needs.

Yeah, I dont think I will worry too much about which engine I get. I think I will just focus on getting a good deal. Just had a look on carsales and not too many around (at least not as many as I wouldve expected).

Got to say that black with red leather looks pretty good. Silver is right out, definitaly cant have 2 silver 1ers in the driveway.

lastly, if a dealer has the car I want, when is the best time to get a deal out of them? I have heard that the end of quarters are a good time, so hopefuly pre-christmas might be a good time to low-ball them.

I saw it on the dyno day back in June and it is a great car but it will no doubt be snapped up before I will be in a position to buy (not for another 3-4 weeks).

Ok, need some opinions on two things.

1. ex demos - Some people have told me to avoid them like the plague as they treated like s%^t by everyone, but seem to be able to get some good deals on them.

2. buying interstate - Is this a royal PITA?

I would be weary to buy ex-demo.

When i test drive a dealer's car i don't really give a sh!t, would just redline the car when is cold etc etc

interstate wouldn't be so bad especially since you are over east already! all the other states are just around the corner!
