16 February 2012 - Queensland Raceway Session

Anyone interested in timed practice laps at QR next Thursday?

Morning/afternoon sessions available.

I'm hoping to take the 135i out for a run

ChrisG, mate if it's an axelback I reckon you're good for at least 300rwkw! You might need an LSD to keep all the power in check?

Tempted. Depends on my work travels... I've asked our motorsport coordinator to try and organise a weekend club (half) day.
I must check to see if he has made any progress.

Yeh it's well organized. I'll definitely do another one. Next mod is an oil cooler. Car keeps going into limp mode and ruining my runs!!

I knew you'd like it.
BMW club day March 2nd at Lakeside. My oil runs much cooler at Lakeside as you're not full throttle everywhere..

Vin, so it was going into limp mode because of the heat?

Were you running meth today? So jealous you went! What types of cars went?

Tim - it's very addictive. I'm definitely signing up for more in the future. I checked the BMW Club website before and I'll be away for the next 2 track days hence why I jumped in on this one. At QR, if you're not on the throttle you're pretty much on the brakes all the time. At Lakeside I'll need to be 100% on my game because there's not much run-off. I think I'll try and do a run at Morgan Park first as I've heard good things about that track. I didn't notice much brake fade so I was happy about that. I'm definitely planning to do an oil cooler though, I wish I jumped on the ER OC during the black friday sale, it was $500!! I really didn't like seeing my temps get that high.

Richard - I'm not sure, I'll need to check it out but I have a feeling it could be my plugs, they are due for replacing. Annoyed I didn't change them before! Only had JB + DP's. Big mistake not having the FMIC in as I've never seen the oil temps go this high before. A nice mix of Jap cars, lots of RX-7's, Skyline's, WRX's, EVO's, S2000's etc. No other Euro's that I could see except for a black 335i. Looked like there was an exotic there as well, not sure what it was but looked like a miniature Enzo. The Evo was built by APC and made almost 700hp. A lot of the other cars were making big power too. In the bay next to me I had a R35 GTR and on the other side a sweet looking RX-7 making 400hp on a base tune. Every car looked fully modified.

The first session I took it really easy to familiarise myself with the track and then every session after I kept limping so I wasn't very consistent. When I limped I did a cool-down then went back to the pits. It was annoying because after a couple good laps I'd manage to overtake a car or two and then I'd limp and then they would pass me again! I got a couple semi-decent laps in for the Sprint and Clubman but I know I still have room for improvement. Every lap there was always a corner I could have taken better or I didn't hit the throttle early enough. Just need more practice and time behind the wheel.

Btw, I really like the format. You're only on the track for 10 minutes max, then you pull into your bay and have enough time to socialise or get a drink etc. If we got a few 1er's along we'd all have a blast. I'm bummed I didn't do these events earlier.

What temps were you seeing Vin? The one time I went to QR I saw up to 137 degrees - as read out on my steering wheel. I was just running an SSTT at the time and wouldn't have been making anything like the power (and hence heat) that you are. I never hit limp mode. Yeah, I'd like better oil cooling before heading back to QR. It'd be a good idea for you to change your oil now after getting it so hot too. BTW, with the SSTT I was just making ground on an E92 M3 down the straights. My SSTT is still for sale
I've never had brake fade with my standard pads & perf. discs. Maybe it's the setup or maybe it's my limp-wristed driving?

Let me put it another way to you - there's more run-off at Lakeside, with no cars coming the other way or blind corners, than you had through a lot of the sections on the Club run last Sunday!

If (drivers name deleted) driving was anything to go by from what I saw, he needs to get his demons out on the track where it's safer for him and others :P
