Tech question

There are two control modules that sit in a foam receptacle in the right rear of my car. They are the PDC unit ( park distance control ) and the Passive access or comfort access unit.

One of these has a tilt detection function, i.e. it detects the car being tilted on to a tray or trailer and sets off the alarm.

There is a reading showing a fault in this tilt function.

My question is - which one of the modules is it? Local dealer won't tell me without a $180 per hour fault check and they are saying it will most likely take 2 hours. Initial check by them shows a fault but they need the full diagnosis to verify. Plus part replacement. I tried Tischer and they don't know. BMW international only refers me to local dealer as does BMW Australia.

I know it is one of these units and knowing that I will be replacing the part anyway I am trying to save the $360 dealer fault check.

Can someone help?

Please only answer if you actually know as guessing is at best 50 /50.
Or let me know if you know someone who knows.

Is this a known unknown or an unknown known? Or that I know there's a known but I don't know which known? Is that a known unknown known?

My head hurts.

How do you know it's one of them? Does the source of that info say for sure it's one of them, but not actually say which?

Gazz, an ex colleague had the same problem and I'm pretty sure the tilt sensor sits with the alarm siren in the e82 and e90.

Good point Joe.

Gazz, if it's not covered by warranty, wouldn't the panel shop who fixed your vehicle knows exactly where and what?

Well, some of you may know that I had a little race track excursion resulting in damage to the right rear quarter, so I can't claim warranty on this one. That's also the reason I know it's one of the control units as they were collateral damage. Amazingly, even though the cases were damaged, the circuit boards appeared intact with the obvious exception of the tilt sensor, which is a diode, or whatever, on the board. ( I don't speak electronics ).
Everything else works fine.

Replace the TILT (nag) sensor on the back rear wheel.

Becomes faulty from time to time, usually a faulty sensor due to rubbing on its own bracket.

I doubt the actual modules would be faulty

Different set up.

And yes the panel shop does know where they are and so do I, they sit almost side by side behind the boot liner in the right side, back, bottom of the boot well in slots in a foam packer. But that's not the problem - it's which one.

I just thought of a new reality show. "Ultimate Geek" A show in which the personalities, ( and I use that word cautiously ), would actually know the answer to my problem and other equally obscure conundrums.

Oh no, I think I've just scared off potential helpers.

I would ask on the global forum as opposed to just Australia, you are far more likely to find someone who knows or has had the same experience.

Can you unplug that sensor and see if its still throws the same code?

unplug the other and see if another popups up.. trial and error.

Good idea. Who do I see to read the code that won't charge me $180 an hour?

I find black electrical tape is the best way to remove error codes from view.
