Key Fob tells oil change needed?
I called the dealer with 1900 miles on my 08 135i to get an oil change . He intimates that it might be covered but they need the key fob to read first. Before that statement he said the oil chnge was covered because it had been over 1 years since I picked up the car. I am not sure of the real story here. Is it 15000 miles, key fob reading or 1 year for the service to be performed under the warranty? Thanks!
FINAL OUTCOME WAS THAT IT WAS CONSIDERED A LOW MILEAGE CHANGE AND DONE AS A FREEBEE!! Last edited by one 35i; 09-22-2009 at 06:26 PM.. Reason: Update info |

When you say 1900 miles, do you mean a cumulative odometer reading or the dash countdown to service reading?
Your oil service is due when the dash countdown gets to zero (schedule when about 1,000 miles) or one year has elapsed since delivery (or your last oil change) - whichever comes first. 15,000 miles is only an average figure for between change intervals, your dealer will rely only on what the car's computer tells them. It sounds like you are due for a free service since you say it's been a year since you got the car. Yes, that information may be read from the key fob. Tom |

The system isn't based strictly on mileage alone. The computer is making calculations based on several factors, and then it's stored in the fob to give the SA an easy way to read it.
It may also require an annual service though, and if that's the case it should be covered. |

I just want to know how you made it through a year of ownership and only put 1900 miles on it.

That's like keeping a 100 lb lab in a 400 sq.ft. studio apartment... it is just cruel to the animal and you should be ashamed of yourself

5W-30 for normal use - 5W 40 for higher temperatures. I would use nothing other than BMW's oil, just to avoid any warranty hassles.
