You might as well light up a cigarette, and talk on your cell phone too. While you are at it, flick your bic lighter on and off.
In most jurisdictions, you could get a fine for having your engine running while putting gasoline in your car. |

I saw a report some years back that said there is very little danger in doing that, but why be dumb enough to do such a thing?
Apparently electrical current is more dangerous. |

You dont leave the car running in order to prevent back fires, due to a pressure change in a low tank. Its rare that it would happen, but it could in everything except SUVs. SUVs have a sort of suppressor that kills backfires before they hit the exhaust tips, its required by law inorder to prevent forest fires.
But I do think that any other class of car has this suppressor and it really chokes the exhaustl |

Let's see, you could lock your keys in the car. Or you could splash gas on the hot exhaust or other hot parts and catch yourself and your car on fire. You could trigger the warning light for a vapor leak from the car computer requiring a dealer reset unless you have a scan tool. You will make yourself and everybody else getting gas breath the exhaust from your car.
A neat feature of BMW's, however, is the real lock on the gas filler door that is only unlocked if the doors are. That makes locking your keys inside, perhaps the most likely bad thing, much less likely. I suspect the reason there are laws against doing this at least in some areas is the low probability of a very bad problem with fire. It probably won't happen but if it ever does you will either die or wish you had shut the car off. Jim

Safety considerations notwithstanding, I have no idea why you'd do this. You're just burning gas for no purpose....

It happened to the drummer of Aerosmith! His car caught fire and he did receive burns.

U have to admit, many times when the temp is -0, I will leave the car running, put the hose in, and head back to the car until it is done. Never blew up anything in over 40 years. When it is warm, I do shut it off. Its the vapor, not the gas that you have to be careful of.
