Good for you. I doubt that is supposed to happen. haha Then again in theory manuals (I suppose even manual shifting an auto) should be more efficient.

Same thing here. I also got the same result with my 330i.

Why wouldn't you? You're the driver, you can see the kind of driving conditions you're in, of course you're going to get better mileage if you shift it yourself. :w00t:

Were those city or highway miles?

I always use the paddle shifters too! More fun to drive.

I would bet that in a controlled test (same speeds, same acceleration, same conditions) the mileage would be same or better in the auto. You can get better mileage in either mode if that's what you're trying to do. Using the shifters may just have you more focused on that goal than when you're driving in auto mode.

EPA says the same thing -- probably why automatic fuel economy in a 135i is 18MPG, while 17MPG for the manual. (See fueleconomy.gov).

Everything is interesting about fuel mileage but none of us bought our 135's for fuel economy haha. We bought it because it's fun to drive. I've gotten as low as 8 MPG on a tank because of how I was driving it, and I didn't care because the gas money was well worth it.
