1M or M3

Op, you should have put up a poll. I pick the 1M over M3 for so many reasons, assuming it will be a true M and handle better. If not I will be holding onto the n55 for a while and eventually add a Porsche or next gen M1 to the stable. M3 is to big and heavy, to me it is not an M car, but a status car that is overpriced. I prefer the style of 135 over M3 as well, it just works for me.

I like I6 torque on weekdays and hi rev turbo lag on weekends. I grew up on V8s, but now in love with turbos

E92 M3

PROS
- Last chance to own a NA high revving V8 with incredible exhaust note
- M tuned chassis
- Remarkable handling and poise (despite size/weight)
- Ride quality suitable for daily driver (available with EDC)
- DCT
- Aggressive looks

CONS
- Power delivery best at high revs and may not be optimal for routine city driving
- Weight (1680 kg)
- Price
- Fuel consumption
- Too civilized/refined

E82 1M

PROS
- FI with low end torque well suited to typical city driving
- Last chance to own a FI six cylinder in a chassis of this size (F20 to use 4 cylinder)
- Lighter weight (?1450-1500 kg) and shorter wheelbase (more edgy/tossable) similar to e36/e46 M3
- Price
- Better aftermarket tuning potential
- DCT (same software/gearing as M3?)
- Unique styling
- BMW's modern day attempt to emulate the e30 M3 (i.e the 1M will assume the traditional role of the M3)

CONS
- Low revving FI motor
- Potential cooling and HPFP issues (similar to N54)
- Not as light as it should be
- Dated chassis (?with limited alteration by M division due to time and financial constraints)
- Polarizing looks
- Soon to be outdated with release of F20 1 series
- No respect (a "poor mans" M3)

Having driven the e92 M3, I found the sonorous motor and handling to be truly remarkable. I would buy it for the engine alone. But the current M3, like the 3 series in general, is getting too big/heavy and overly refined. It doesn't have the edginess that I am looking for.

If the 1M is in fact a throwback to previous generation M3s, then I will go with the baby M. On the other hand, if they use a minimally tweaked 335is N54, then I will direct my deposit towards the last of the naturally aspirated M cars.

^^ That's pretty much it. Though I'd argue that it has plenty of low end grunt for daily driving. Just not as much as the N54/N55 under 3k rpms. x35i owners are just spoiled by an abundance of low end torque.

Seriously? It's the fastest and best handling mass produced M3 to date. Are you going to say the CTS-V and GTR aren't high performance cars either? Those way much more than the M3. And it isn't a status car nor is it overpriced. If the M3 is overpriced, then the 135i is as well since you can get a 370z for much less than a 135i and get all the performance + an LSD to boot.

It sounds like you just haven't gotten a chance to really drive the car.

I base this on my driving experience in the E92 M3 and the 2010 135i ...
and some extrapolation based on what we know/guess about the 1M.

Exactly! I've had an S2000 for 6yrs and its still amazing to me. Thats even after I drive hi-po stuff too.

Yes, but lets stick to BMW. I'm saying the M3 v8 should be smaller and lighter cheaper than what it is now. I drove the M3 on some back roads and never touched the top end. For street fighting, M1 will outperform and M3. On the track, you can mod the M1 and it will annoyingly nip at the M3 at a far lower cost. The M3 is big, if it where smaller/lighter you would say it would better as well. An e30 M3 can nip at the M3 on the twistys, but then the v8 is gone on the straight. In terms of handling I would disagree with you.

M3 is definitely over priced and I know this one will be too. ON the other hand I like what I see and Ill probably pay it if isnt that outrageous

You bet. I was more interested on testing the DCT at the time on slow tight roads. Sales guy didn't like me testing the forced shift at redline.

Are you going to do a write up comparing 135 with M3?

I'm gonna make you live with that one... 911's are some of the most capable track cars around. BMW's balance is great, I don't deny (which is why I drive one of course) but to say Porsche isn't as good if not even just as good, is a foolish statement.
