Thermostat bad???
New guy here. 2008 135I with 44K miles. Car overheated last week when wife was sitting in driveway after driving home. I was out of town and did get a chance to look at it till Sunday night. After about 5 minutes of idling on the driveway, yellow high temp indicator came on. Shut down car and let it sit until Monday afternoon.
On Monday to check water pump, I did the air purge and can hear a series of "buzzes" I assume this is the washing machine sound described in other posts. So I think the water pump is working. I also started the car for a few seconds and shut it down and heard what I think was the water pump continue to run for a few seconds. Bad hearing so I can't be positive. After the pump purge, I had the local repair shop next door use his code scanner. Did not drive the car, he walked next door for me. No codes were found. He is not a BMW repair shop. If in fact the sound I hear means the pump is ok, this would lead me to the thermostat. Is there a way to check this? One other item of interest is that the cooling fan comes on in less than a minute and runs at high speed. Any ideas? Should I just replace the thermostat? |

If you're under 50k call the dealer and take it in for service...should still be under warranty.

+1. bc a new waterpump and thermostat is over $1K! Even IF your over 50K miles, I think the waterpump might be part of the powertrain warranty - and hence covered. On most cars the waterpump is considered part of the engine for powertrain stuff. |

That is the free bmw maintenance warranty. The engine/trans (powertrain) is coverage for 4 years/50,000 miles. The HPFP is covered until 100K or 10 years(?). AND then there is the federal emissions warranty that is 8 years or 80K miles(I believe).
