N54 (modded) vs stock N55 video:

Lets give the N54 suspension mods, a cobb tune and a rally driver and see who wins.

Actually N55 has low end and high end....N54 has the mid range though

The N55 stock wins because it has the DCT tranmission. I've owned both in N54 form - manual and DCT and the DCT is signicantly quicker. (shorter gearing and faster shifts AND it maintains boost through the each gearchange....)

This proved nothing. I am a fan of the N54 simply because that was what was available for my car at the time and I chose the Step. Now the N55 is here and the DCT replaces the Step, so now the new N55 in my opinion is more desirable because it has the transmission of choice that I did want had it been available. Manual is more fun, no doubt and also lighter, but if I could N54 with DCT in an E82 shell I'd be happy. This video though somewhat amusing hasn't helped at all. At least make it fair and run N54 manual versus N55 manual with JB or Procede on both cars. Also filming this in the wet didn't help whatsoever.

I didn't realise the N54 was available in DCT?

The 335is and the Z4 35i / 35is has the DCT + n54. The 335is has 320HP and the Z4 35is has 340hp (same engine tune as the new 1M but quicker due to DCT on the spec sheet to 60).

This review angers me! Why would BMW use the n54 on the 1M?
They made us pay top dollar for the n55 and then don't use it on the 1M, why is that the case?
I am regretting my decision about takin the n55. The n54 must be faster if it is used on the 1M!

Looks like you answered your own question. I may be wrong but the way I understand it is, the N54 has more potential than the N55. The move to the N55 was prompted more by the need for better fuel efficiency than anything else.

Looks like time was the major factor behind the decision.

The initial engine proposal was the N55 but they were having issues that cannot be solved within the time window. BMW Greenlit this car in July 09, now over a year later we see it as it intended , although testing still commences until the launch. Valvetronic was the main cause of the time delay but BMW have spent some time on this and are using the N55 as a basis for the next M3.

As someone who is shooting for the next gen M3, I am hopeful they will base it off the N54 since that is what I own. Oh well, I guess only time will tell, but this post from Scott suggests otherwise.

First off isnt the n54 on the 1m an s54? Slight mods to it i assume?

And your right, BMW gets lotsa money by proving efficiency in proggressive engine design. They didnt have to change much but by adding twin scroll engine they proved Fuel economy to be better and thus marketed the n55 motor. Im not sure about the potential however. Id assume both have equal potential.

The S54 was the engine used in the E46 M3. I believe the engine in the 1M is still referred to by BMW as the N54.

Explaining the 7DCT's launch control... "DTC is off..." Wrong. DTC is on for launch control. Using LC in the rain is suicide anyway.

Engine in the 1M is just a normal tuned N54 by all accounts

The N54 has a nice forged crank vs cast in the N55 I believe is one of the structural differences between the two.

The N55 will likely be used in other performance applications later.
