The 135i has a pretty small gas tank. Thats fairly normal...

I have a question on this function: what does the launch control mean? Is it something like the turbo engine overboost for several seconds, or the DCT is doing something like 'brake torque' for launch?

I say fumbled as my salesman asked me to pull it out of the showroom and little did I know how tough it is to figure this out without any instruction.

Initial thoughts: Unlike my other car (Ferrari 360 with F1 tran) the stalks on the steering wheel are closer than is ideal to the paddles... but I think that is simply gonna be a matter of getting used to. Now the good news.........smooth as silk are the shifts and although I have only 50 miles logged to date its as good as any paddle shift tranny I have used. Only shifting at 3k-4.5K (during breakin) its very quick and ultra smooth but it DOES feel like you are shifting unlike some systems from other manufacturers where the shifting is more muted like an autobox. A buddy of mine who is very involved with PCA who has driven several of their PDK transmission cars drove my car for 2 miles today and loved it also for its smoothness and thought it similar.

Another feature I like is that even if you have it in AUTO mode you can start using the paddles whenever you like and it overrides the current setting of the tranny. System does revert back to AUTO mode as soon as you stop shifiting.

General fit and finish is excellent. I came from Audi for last 3 years and BMW is very nicely done. Will post some pictures and further updates later..........So far NO REGRETS over switching to the dark side (away from manual transmission)........
Does your car have the DCT shift indicator on the tach? I don't see it.

Neither. Launch Control is where the DCT feathers the clutch for you in a way that gets (arguably) the best acceleration possible. You go through a sequence of steps to start it, put it in sport mode, turn DSC to DTC, etc, then press down on the gas while holding the brakes; the engine will hold at some RPM (I think it's 4500, but on the E60 M5's SMG they cut it to like 1500 in the US vs 4500 in europe for some reason, so I dunno that for sure). Then when you let off the brake the transmission will feather the clutch, allowing for some wheelspin but not as much as if you dumped it, until you get going. I'm pretty sure it'll also upshift for you at redline, based on the Z4 DCT's owner's manual.

to the OP, congrats and its a very nice car.

to those who are contemplating DCT (or any dual clutch trans), my personal experience is that its very hard to tell during a short drive or test drive if you will like this type of transmission.

you have to get extended seat time to be able to make an informed decision...unfortunately.

Thank you for your info! So besides the launch control, does our 135's N55 engine has the over-boost mode that can temporarily pump up the torque?

I'm pretty sure they don't. The only BMWs I know of that have that are the "is" cars w/ factory-tuned N54s.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this...

Not completely related to BMW itself: I heard the mini cooper S has some sort of it.

No shift lights in the Tachometer

sorry unlike the M3 there are NO shift lights in the Tach.......agree completely with the comment that you need a lot of seat time to truly evaluate the DCT.......with 180 miles now, its growing on me even more........

Paddles........dont sweat it......car is so much more!!

Although at first I also disliked the silver trim on the paddles, now with a few days behind the wheel I really dont notice them at all.......not an issue....

this car is such unbeliveable value...........at price after dealer discount of about $41.3 including : DCT, M Sport, Premium, PDC, Satellite Radio and Harmon Kardon (which for any music fans is the best car stereo I have listed to in a while)........you have to consider that you are getting 90% of M3 performance at a 35% discount!!!!!!!

That sucks. Hopefully they will do this right on the M1.

Sounds interesting. Are there any specific maintenance requirements for the DCT (e.g., recommended fluid change intervals, specific service requirements, etc.?)

unaware of extra maint. costs for DCT so I opted for 6 year 100K BMW maintanence so it wont be an issue.........so far even though I am only taking it up to 4k- 4.5k during break in (180 miles so far) there appears to be no turbo lag and you even hear the blipping of the throttle from exhaust on downshifts..........so far I am EXTREMELY happy with my choice of DCT over 6MT.......

The gas mileage will get MUCH better as you get more miles on the car. Seems that BMW builds these things super tight and they have to "work" harder at the beggining of their lives. Once you get to around 1200-1400 miles the car will get better mileage and you might notice more power (thats how my current 135 was and older 335) I would image that the same goes for the N55 but no one has had their car long enough for us to know. ENJOY THE DRIVE!!

will the car hold gear and bump against the redline or does it automatically shift to the next gear?

just curious --i find it infuriating that the VW DSG implementation in all of its cars (VW or Audi) will shift up no matter what.

sorry: one more question --is there a big lag to downshift two gears at a time? i also noted this when i have driven VAG DSG-equipped cars.
