What size for winter setup?

Hello all,

Just purchased my first 135i, 2011 with M sport package

I am looking at tirerack and looking at a set of 17x7.5" wheels and either 205/50 or 215/45 size tires on all four wheels.

Is one size better than the other?

Is it recommended to run larger in the back than the front or is it OK if they are the same all the way around?

i rock 205/50/17's all around for snows. ive heard the narrower tire helps dig through the slush better, so the tire actually touches the road better. its the only size ive run on this car, so i cant say that its better than anything else.

+1. I also run 205/50HR17 winter RFT with TPMS. This is the size that BMW says to use. But lots of people go wider or even run 18" snows. I think its best you run the skinniest and tallest sidewall tire out there. This is why BMW says to use this size. You just have to be carefull with the throttle on cold days - bc you can spin the (any snow)tires at will.

What ever size snow tire you go with... make sure it has the "SNOW FLAKE" and "M&S" symbols on the sidewall. Also be aware that BMW changed the TPMS sensors in Sept/10 and onwards. So if you buy used wheels make sure the TPMS are compatible with your car.

Here is a good thread to see what everyone is running for thier winter setup. See my post #40 for my BMW wheel package.

205/50HR17 winter RFT with TPMS on all corners.. That's my setup with LM-25s

Skinny and tall is what you want, so you have more weight per inch square which helps traction.

I run 215/50/17's since they were the tires I was using on my SRT4 prior to purchasing my 135i.

225/45-17 on 17x7.5" ET44 wheels. We don't get a lot of deep wet snow here in the winter, but have a lot more cold and packed snow and ice on the roads mixed with cold dry road surfaces, so wider is fine.

I went with the 215/45/17s with Conti extreme winter contact tires. Looking forward to getting them and testing it out
