Just Installed MFactory LSD

Just installed this afternoon. Helical 3.46 LSD full pumpkin swap.

I can't make any real analysis as of yet, traffic through the bay area was slow at best. It was installed today at Alekshop in Fremont, CA and it took a whole day's time.

I'm hoping to "break it in" for the next ~1K and replace diff fluid with the Redline 75W-90NS (non slip version) as recommended by M-factory. I also have the MFactory diff bushings installed too, and so far, no NVH noted, no in-cabin warning lights (fingers-crossed).

I'll attempt to take pictures when I can.

Best upgrade ever for some. But care, now you won't spin only one wheel when loosing traction, you will go sideways.

you don't really need to, but i guess everything will just be good and settled. I "broke" mine in technically, but that's only because I got a new clutch. By breaking it in I still went full throttle a lot but was gentle on the upshifts and rolled on the throttle from a standstill

3.46 gears and torque pull hard enough to spin 3rd for me, even with TC on the car can get squirrelly if you shift roughly

When we say "Break-in" for a Helical LSD, it is different from the "Break-in" for a Plate type LSD.

Technically, a Helical LSD doesn't need broken in as it runs on gears only, however, as with all new metallic parts, there will be some initial metal shavings from the metal-on-metal contact. This is why we recommend flushing the fluid out after around 500 miles, as this gives sufficient time for the gear surfaces to "mate" together.

With a plate type LSD, break-in consists of doing figure-of-8's for 30mins so that the left & right side plates "mate" together. Failure to do so will require in uneven pull from the LSD. This applies to all Plate type LSD's. With our new Type-SS active-friction plates soon to be released, this forgoes the necessity to puke after shortly installing your new LSD though

Went with a 3.46 final drive LSD myself, although from a different vendor. This combined with an agressive custom tune makes the car come alive. Hard pulls in any gears, even fifth and sixth gear.

On extreme performace 255/35R18 tires, I still get DSC intervention in first 3 gears. Needless to say, I take DSC off at the track after my warm up laps.

One thing that I noticed at the track is that there is still e-diff electronic intervention when powering out of tight hair pins. As I unwind the steering wheel at the end of my turn with a steady throttle, I feal a surge forward when my steering wheel has less angle in it. It is as if the rear brake pads (e-diff) are letting off.

There is another thread on this on 1addicts. Someone has found a way in INPA to code out/disable this e-diff behavior ...

Thanks. I bookmarked this INPA install video for later. Will attempt messing around with this in the off-season ...

it took an entire day to do a pumpkin swap?! I have had done 3x pumpkin swaps and each time it was a 2 hour job.

3.46 makes the car feel so much quicker. You will have fun with it.

i guess i was the "all-day car", because they were working on other small-jobs while mine was up on the lift.

-customer was reverting his 3 series suspension back to stock and getting an alignment
-customer x 2 were picking up their car
-shop was out of parts and awaiting from BMW dealership (i.e. BMW diff fluid [~$113] and E82-specific differential nut [~$20])
-only two mechanics in the shop
-and they threw away my stock diff bushings

you guys think im missing something here? (see below, view is looking up from behind toward right passenger's rear side)

Not missing anything, the diff mounting hole is tapped, the bolt screws into the diff with no nut.

Glad to know. MFactory also reassured me that its threaded and no nut is required.

This happens even with DSC fully off (as opposed to 1 press of button for DTC)??

Correct! With a long press of the DTC button: yellow triangle/DSC off symbol ...
Im not the only one on 1addicts to confirm the behavior.
At least the e-diff interaction is not violent, but it is there, and it competes with your throttle application, out of tighter turns. Perhaps it is more apparent for those making more power, or with a higher final drive diff ratio ...
