Sent my 1er away on a tow truck tonight
On our way back from celebrating my friend's birthday, hit a fox on the Autobahn at 90-100mph (speed limit-free zone). I maintained control, but the car didnt fare too well from the impact.
The area of the bumper that divides the passenger-side brake cooling duct and the opening for the FMIC was the point of impact, and I believe I split the fox in 2. Half of him with thru the brake duct, the other half slammed into the FMIC. Front bumper is split in half in that area, the iCarbon lip is destroyed, lower grill has a giant hole in it, the FMIC is barely sitting in there, the brake cooling duct is all messed up. I even found evidence of fox on my rear fender. And somewhere on the A62 is the passenger-side kidney grill, because thats missing too. Oh, and it was leaking coolant everywhere, but it looks like it was only coolant, no oil or fuel. Being it was pitch black out, I didnt get any good pics. I'll try to get a rental and check out the car in the daytime to see how she is. Im so bummed right now, aaaaaaand nothing can be done until monday. To add insult to injury, this car was supposed to go on a boat in 5 days to get shipped to the States. Definitely not going to make that date. |

I am sorry to hear this Sylon. I have heard that the German insurance will not pay any claims unless there is some fox hair or guts on/in your car. (I kid you not!) Just a heads up. Maybe look over your car tomorrow in the daylight,

Sorry to hear... but another one walks away with very little injuries.
I feel bad for your car. But dammit if these things aren't just solid in protecting the passengers. Hard to say but true... it's only metal (and other stuff) |

My insurance company already said I'm covered completely. The German police found some of the fox, and there was another bimmer going the other way that hit another fox at the same time. No joke. They had to respond to both accidents roughly a mile from each other. And there was some bits of fox on the back part of the rear fender, passenger-side. How I don't know, but it's there. It makes you wonder how air travels under the car. I'm sure we'll be finding more bits of fox come daylight. |

It could have been a lot worse. I'm glad you're okay. Too bad about the fox
I'm kind of tempted to post that "This thread is useless without pics" smiley (or set of smileys?), but that borders on good vs bad taste :P

Im working on that, lol. First I need a rental car so I can drive up to where my car is sitting. Luckily no windows were broken and that the fox missed the airbag sensor. I dont have to worry about the weather getting inside the car. I'm hoping the fox missed a lot of the inside of the car. I think the back half of him hit the FMIC and bounced down onto the road, and it was just the impact force that caused the coolant leak. Would an engine start smoking instantly when coolant starts leaking? Or would that take a few minutes? Because I stopped right after impact and immediately shut the car down. It started smoking and there was a burning smell. |

As promised, here are some pics of the damage done after hitting a Fox on the Autobahn at speed. I never found the fox afterwards, but the police and fire dept did. After seeing the damage in daylight, I am starting to think that this fox may have stayed in 1 piece as it traveled thru the bumper (hence why there is no blood). Currently the car is sitting in a tow yard waiting for an insurance adjuster to view it on Monday. I just caught them before they closed and had to hurry taking pics because I had a taxi waiting on me.
1. Full shot, the area of the bumper right below the tow hook is where we (my friend who was traveling with me at the time and I) believe the main point of impact occurred. The fox was traveling from left to right across the road, so its upper body would have wet thru the brake cooling duct and its lower body would have gone thru the FMIC. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...DSC_0356sm.jpg 2. Close up of the brake duct and everything the fox broke as he went thru it. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...DSC_0354sm.jpg 3. Driver's side faired a lot better, but the lip is toast. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...DSC_0362sm.jpg 4. Another full view. In this shot you can see the driver's side brake cooling duct and how its supposed to look. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...DSC_0363sm.jpg In the first and last shots, you can see what looks like the tape that held the front lip on under the center part of the bumper. That isnt all tape, there was still CF attached to the tape on the bumper. Meaning, the tape was actually stronger than the lip itself. |

The fox did not go "through"...it was hit by the brake duct and intercooler grill, then the air drag and speed forced it to go underneath the car.

Hey man, I replied to your pics on FB. If you want I have a set of inserts grills for the brake duct laying around. Send me your address and I can have them in the mail by tuesday. Glad you're ok.
A couple of weeks ago when the roads iced over we had a guy on 470 heading to Bamberg in a govt. vehicle and encountered "BAMBO". Needless to say, he couldn't avoid a charging deer 'cause of the ice and killed it.....at the cost of >8.000 euros in damage
