Oil Change Overdue?
Background... Had my 1M delivered from a private party in Boston last month. Car had 250 miles on the odo. Was struggling with trying to determine if I should change the oil now and then again at 1,200 and then... wow again on its anniversary (May).
So after the rain this week and with the nice weather this week, I decide to take the 1M. Get this - the car is saying Oil Service past due 06/2011. I swear it was NOT saying this the first three times I drove in Feb. A call to my dealer and they say "well the car is not programmed to talk to us yet, so what I think is happening is it expects you to drive it 1,000 miles a month and June would be that time so it thinks you should have done it back then." - This frustrates me because I know it is totally wrong. I ask if I bring it in, will you change the oil? He says "No, not until you have 1,000 miles". I explain that the car is calling for an oil change and he says "Doesn't matter." So I call the original dealer that sold it (in Boston) - talk to the scheduling lady who is basically clueless and tells me to check my gas cap. Now what? Of note the head of service of my dealer is out, so I was talking to the #2 - I suppose I could wait until he is back in and then bring the car back?

Lots of us experienced our 1Ms calling for service due well before we had 1200 miles. Mine started showing up at around 250 miles when I was still in Germany. In terms of mileage, you don't need to worry about it.
However, the oil has been in the car since last May, and that may be an issue. Or it may not. I know in the past with organic oil, you generally wanted to change it every 6 months regardless of the mileage. However, with synthetic oil, that may not be an issue. Regardless, if you want to change your oil before the 1200 first service, your dealership will be happy to do it, but you'll have to pay. Or do it yourself and save some money. BMW's free maintenance is only for their prescribed maintenance intervals, and anything beyond that will be on your dime.

You are allowed one oil change per calendar year regardless of mileage. That is a time based oil change. If your car came into service last May then this May you can get an oil change, though not before the one year is up. I rarely drive more than 10k per year right now and the last 2 years saw me getting the oil change on a time basis instead of my car calling for it.

Yep, totally familiar with the one year thing - did it on my last two BMWs. I always hit that mark before the car calls for it. HOWEVER, the car does not call for the one year oil change. You just have to know about it. In my case, it is calling for an oil change (per it) since LAST JUNE! (which like I said, it wasn't doing last time - or I was so damn giddy driving the car I did not notice).
I've spoken to another dealer and he talked to his techs -they believe the CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) system was not setup properly during the PDI - which sort of makes sense since I still have the magical pen holder stuck to my windshield

Don't sweat the oil change. The biggest concern is the build up of corrosive materials, which result from combustion blow by, water moisture, blow by raw gas, and all that mixing into the oil. Since the engine hasn't been driven those byproducts are in there. I would take your new sweet ride for a looong drive. Not a bad remedy. That will help burn off much of that volatile crap in there. May is not too far away, and if you are driving it daily with runs that get the engine oil hot, and 12-15 minutes beyond that, you can hold off until May and get it done for free per BMW's maintenance schedule. Then you'll be back on schedule. Happy motoring in your fine new ride. What color? Maybe I'll see you out on the Chicago roads. I haven't seen one yet. Truly rare indeed. |

I ended up with black - sooo wanted the orange, but with 740 of them here, they are sort of hard to find! I do need to take some long drives (my dealer was telling me to try and put 800 miles on it this weekend, um, not sure if they know how far that really is!). I'm out in the western suburbs, so maybe see you around sometime! I personally thought the X6 was rare, until the day after I ordered mine I found out the guy down the street had one

The 1M's first service is solely based on a 90 day clock from when the car left the factory in Leipzig. Just drive your 1M for 1,200 miles and then have the breakin service done. BMW NA will replace the engine oil(same oil (LL-1)as the 135i's use NOT the 10w60 TWS //M oil!) and filter and rear diff oil. Diff oil should be the SAF-XJ w/FM. BMW NA does not pay for a tranny oil change... but BMW AG says to do it. It requires MTF-LT-5 oil. Go look up the 1M break in thread on this. Dack PS: Here is Metak's awesome 1M oil thread... They said it was ok to drive the car for 1,200 miles, then have the break-in service done. What Dackelone said |

Note, I have two preferred dealers - one for sales, one for service.

ok sounds good. I sent a BMW (using SOS) service thing once, but the dealer never called and they said they were never notified... this was last year at some point... maybe I'm not "connected"
