Best way to sell used car?

Now that I have my new e90, I need to sell my 2001.5 VW Passatt. I placed an ad in Autotrader.com with great photos and a competitive price, but NO CALLS or emails as of yet (it's been 1 week).

Any ideas on how I might increase her exposure and get her sold? She'll sell herself if someone who's wanting one sees her.

Since we don't know where you live it is difficult to make suggestions, however, most people still shy away from buying ordinary cars (as opposed to exotics) via the internet. You might try the local newspaer(s) and place a sign in the rear window with a telephone number. Good luck.

I took my SAAB to Carmax a month ago. They offered $ 7,000. Kelly Blue book trade in value on excellent conditions was $ 6,895. So it was a good offer, but since I had 3 weeks to sale may car I didn’t take it. I tried an ad at cars.com. I was asking $9,700 or better offer. It sold in a week for $ 8,000. Now is gone and I’m driving a Ford Focus from Hertz.

Autotrader, CarMax, Craigslist.org (make sure you post it in your own area), and the local newspaper of course. You can even post in the classified sections of numerous automotive boards. Good luck with your sale.

Yeah, you could go get a carmax quote (they are good for a while, 30 days I think), then try to sell it for $1K more on your own. If you can't unload it by the time the quote expires, run down and let carmax buy it.

Took my 2002 325xi into Carmax, they offered $17,400 for it. I put an ad on cars.com, sold it for $20K 3 days later.

I put my vw gli in kbb.com (which also runs in cars.com), and must have had over 20 calls on the car. Sold it in about three weeks.

I have sold my last 3 cars using Local Classifieds. The ad cost me $54 for 10 days. I sold my last car the first day the ad ran and was averaging 6 calls a day.

i took my 1997 honda accord to a local car lot and let it sit there for a few days. ended up selling it for $8100. I was pretty happy about that, considering KBB said that a private party sale should have brought in under $7500, and that's with the car being completely clean, which it wasn't.

i don't trust KBB at all.

It seems the moral of the story is to target as many avenues (ads, sites) as possible to get the best deal.

Autotrader.com

Keep in mind, you'll get few responses if your price is "too" high....

I don't know where you live, but my suggestion is to park the car somewhere with a sign (in addition to the internet ads). The vehicles I've sold on my own have went for more money from being on display than what I was offered off the internet.

Find a busy shopping/eating area with outdoor parking. Get a spot with good visability from a busy road or from the most popular place in the shopping area. Place a sign in the window and leave the car there (may have to move it each night). It helps to pick an area that would have your targeted buyer. If you were selling a BMW I would go to an upscale shopping area. This only works if you have a quality vehicle that looks nice. If you are trying to get top dollar for a piece of junk you will have a hard time ever selling it.

Here's the link to the autotrader.com posting of my car. Let me know what you think...

It's probably early still to say autotrader isn't working (just 7 days now), but I'll follow everyone's directions and get more exposure. Thanks.

Best way to sell your VW is at www.vwvortex.com. I had an 03 Jetta 1.8t and I had a guy make an offer and purchase the car without ever physically seeing it or driving it. And I got top dollar for it. So I'd poke around there and see what you can come up with.
