Non-Approved BMW Phones

If you've read my previous posts regarding my faulty electronics: no chime at start-up, no radio/cd/iPod/bluetooth sound (the bluetooth will connect, calls can be made and answered, but i can't hear anything) then you already know the symptoms.

I took my car in regarding slow cranks, and mentioned the audio problem as well. I got my HPFP replaced, and they couldn't replicate the radio problems. The SA advised me against using my current phone with my car; that possibly it was interfering with the car's MOS BUS (maybe not spelled correctly, just how I heard it).

Long story short: Can anyone confirm or refute that a non-approved BMW Phone can interfere with the car's electronics systems over bluetooth?

Mine believes me, but can't reproduce the problem. I suppose the thing to do is to get the problem to occur; not shut the car off and drive it over there. The only problem for me is I work M-F 9-5. The service department opens at 7am and closes at 6pm. They're open on Saturday with limited hours.

Since the radio issue is completely random, I don't know how to get my car over for this problem...

Non-approved phones can cause the TCU to lock up, which will cause problems with the MOST bus.

In general I find my iPod problems are solved by unplugging the iPod, playing/pausing a song while it's unplugged and plugging it back in. If that doesn't work, sometimes you have to restart the whole car. Bit of a pain but it's a rare problem for me

Just to clarify, jotapeh, it's not an issue with the iPod. It's the entire audio system. The car won't chime at you when you start it. The radio/CD/AUX/iPod won't even be an option if you press the Audio button.

I didn't know what it would be...when the SA told me it could be non-approved phone issues, I bought into it. Turned off the Bluetooth on my phone and my car, deleted the pairing on the phone and car and thought my problems would be solved. However, I came across that problem again.

Furthermore, shadowiix is saying that his car is doing it as well, and he doesn't have a Bluetooth system in his car.

In any case, I hope this problem can be acknowledged and fixed by BMW NA soon.

It's really annoying to have bought a $40k car and have no audio during your morning commute.

I still have not paired my bluetooth phone, and have bluetooth turned off on both the car and the phone. I plan on buying an approved bluetooth phone in the future (probably a Blackberry 8800)

My sound doesn't even work at all (no radio, CD, iPod, etc) sometimes at random.

Not sure if this is because I was using a "non-approved" phone, or a faulty sound system to begin with. That's what I'm trying to figure out. shadowiix reports having this problem in a non-bluetooth 128i, I'm starting to lean towards a faulty sound/electrical system; not a conflicting problem through bluetooth.

Sorry guys I hope the service department is able to fix your problem. I am using the LG KC910 Renoir phone and it works flawlessly. Good phone, I recommend it.

For the past week and a half (maybe two weeks), I've had my phone deleted from my car's bluetooth, my car deleted from my phone's bluetooth, and bluetooth on the car and the phone always switched off.

I've still randomly encountered a non-working audio system. I am deducing that my phone is not the cause of the audio problem.

BMW NA sent me an email regarding my latest service with Long Beach BMW. All-in-all I gave them high marks (they have excellent customer service). The only low mark I gave them was in regards to all the problems being fixed. I mentioned the radio issue not being resolved.

A follow-up email from BMW NA came asking for more details. Hopefully, this will result in some kind of fix. I hate not listening to my morning radio on my commute to work. I hate leaving work only to be stuck in traffic without any tunes.

Honestly, I don't mind it so much if I'm just going out by myself, but it is a tad bit embarrassing when going out with friends riding in the car. Above all else though, I hate getting through my work day without any morning radio and again no tunes coming home.

After reading this I am reminded of a situation I encountered when I was trying to find a USB stick that worked with the car. Not exactly as described, but may be worth a shot removing if you're using one. BMW has been kind enough not to recommend a brand or model of USB stick and allowing us to use the scientific Hit and Miss technique.

I have an unapproved Samsung and the Bluetooth functions normally. I have all of my number, contacts, and it even makes calls!

Here's a question: Blackberry 8900. Why is it approved for AT&T (named Blackberry Bold), but not TMobile?

All Bluetooth is CRAP. It is unsecure, flaky and bad news - no matter whose BT you use. There - I said it. Now - those of you who will defend Bluetooth - good for you - but for the most part you will get nothing but problems, poor battery life on the device and overall, can be a high security risk.
