It will be either 0W-40 Mobil One or 5W-30 Castrol Syntec (German, not US)- have not decided, just bought my first BMW ever 2 weeks ago. From what I read they are nearly the same viscosity. And this is tricky as after reading many posts on oil, there are only 3 types of oil allowed that are readily available in the US. (All full synthetic):
5W-30 Castrol Syntec- (German, not US)- which is BMW oil. (Order on line or buy at BMW dealer only- not available in parts stores) 0W-40 Mobil One (Commonly available) 5W-30 Valvoline SynPower (Not sure if this is US brand or German). US brand is commonly available. I am curious as to what people who do their own work use. From reading other posts I see that 0W-40 Mobil One is most common. |

I now use German Castrol Edge FST, 0w40.
I use to use German Castrol RS Edge 0w40, but the FST has replaced this oil.

Lubro-Moly...get it from BavAuto. Had an oil analysis done by Blackstone at my 75K mark and it came back saying that the engine looks better than average for an N54 of my mileage and that I could go as far as 6000 miles between oil changes. I still do 5000 though. I'm happy with it. It's not on the LL-1 list but it's on the LL-4 list...not that it makes it ok...just a point.

Mobil-1 0W40...top of the "other approved oil list" by BMW. Have used it in all of my cars, past, current, and future.

BMW says you can use ANY oil in the 5w30, 5w40, 0w30, 0w40 grades that carry a "BMW Long Life 1 (LL1)" rating on them. And the oil has to be of API SM or better. Many of us noticed cooler oil temps when we switched to German Castrol(G.C.) 0w40 oil. I used to run Mobil-1 European blend 0w40 LL1 oil, but then I switched to German Castrol in 0w40. I noticed right a way that the engine sounded less metallic on cold starts and seemed to run smoother. Also the oil temps went down almost two needle widths! I was sold on G.C.

Whatever the dealer installs. I probably will never change my own oil on this car. The dealer only charges $88 AND gives me a free rental, which is usually something cool.
On my old F150 I just use whatever is on sale! |
