Stock car, found limp mode yesterday:
The code says it wasn't making correct boost, but it's not clear why.
About a half hour into a one hour spirited drive I noted that the car didn't seem to be pulling as hard as usual out of some corners. I suspected overboost wasn't available for some reason, temps were reading fine and it was high 60s out so it shouldn't have gotten too hot. Gassed the car up, and pulling out of the station I immediately noticed it was well under normal power. Pulled over, checked the charge pipe, etc, found nothing. Pulling away it felt fine again. Finally, 10 minutes later, the car went to limp mode while overtaking: "engine malfunction - limited power". Drove to a dealership... Only one instance of a code was noted, showing the car didn't hit full boost just under 3k rpm. They didn't find any obvious cause, and given that it was 4 pm on the day before thanksgiving and I was on a road trip 200 miles from home they were not going to start pulling things apart to do a "smoke test". The car cooled down, they reset it, full power returned and so far it hasn't re-occurred (though I haven't pushed it as hard for as long). So, the suspicion is an intermittent boost leak at stock boost levels, perhaps related to heat. Is there a known issue that fits this profile? Can the charge pipe leak intermittently before it blows?

Seems like as if no one got limp mode with a stock car before you! Lots of views and no comments. Since I push the car sometimes for an hour or more on certain roads, but never got that yet, I am curious as well to know the reasons.
Take it as a bump

Maybe you have a loose charge pipe - and your not making full boost. ???

b33g33 had something similar to this happen back in July -- one of the turbos ended up being replaced due to a wastegate not closing fully.

Arg. Happened again today. I was at a PCA autocross running in 3rd overall with a shot at second- not bad for a stock car on street rubber (PSS), the cars in front were on real rubber. 3rd pass of the afternoon I lost boost close to the end of the run. It seems engine temperature related same as last time I'd been pushing hard at relatively low speed, and while oil temps were OK the engine probably got hotter than usual.
Not a nice way to end the day. Something seems to be "sticking" when the car is pushed hard for a long period- boost was fine one second, then gone the next, but with no obvious external leaks. I can't think of much that would stick other than the wastegate.... Again I noticed it 20 minutes before the car threw the engine light, so I suspect it may not be the computer shutting down the fun early.

Do you have any wastegate noise . . . cricket sound when modulating throttle?

I didn't notice a cricket sound, no, but my helmet has noise muffling built in and I was going slightly sideways at the time. No cricket sound on the way home after the boost was gone, but I'll listen for it.

Here is the thread where the wastegate chatter was discussed, with vids. No one has found limp mode, just noise.

Pete, have you had them take a good look at the wastegates and the turbos? This was my issue.

Took the car to the dealer today: #6 on the list, Charge Pipe Cracked. Replaced under warranty.
Hopefully learning from Dan Parker's unfortunate incident, I did discuss the idea that they replace the charge pipe with an aftermarket version of my choosing, preserving the factory warranty. $200 in labor. I love the car, but it is a little embarrassing when the only mod I'm considering making is to fix a reliability issue BMW must have known about for a few years. Really?

Was there any obvious crack in the charge pipe when you inspected it? I'm just curious if the crack was in the typical location.
Also, was the dealer willing to put on an aftermarket charge pipe? In any event even though it's a hassle I'm glad it was a straightforward fix. Annoying, though ... |

Unfortunately by the time I got there to pick up the car the mechanics had gone home, and they couldn't produce the actual charge pipe. Notes simply say cracked.
Yes, the dealer was willing to install an aftermarket pipe. Not sure if I'll try to get something in writing that says it won't void my warranty, or if I just go with it assuming they couldn't use installation as an excuse to void as they did in Dan Parker's case. I agree it's annoying more than anything, glad it wasn't serious.

BMW's approach in this issue so far is infuriating: if you're the picture perfect ///M driver and push the car as intended, you're made to waist a significant amount time to see a dealer to get it changed. If you're proactive by replacing it, they show no common sense in their warranty dealings. |
