R-S3 vs PSS
Looking for tires to mount on a new set of Apex 10x18, 10.5x18 wheels.
Narrowed my search between R-S3 and PSS in 265/35-18 and 285/35-18 sizes. This is my sunny day fun car with at most 6 non competitive track days a year. No cold weather, little wet weather driving. My car with tune/fbo is fighting for traction on the current stock 19" w. PSS. Would the Hankooks or other be a better choice vs the michelins?

Neither - Dunlop ZII's - PSS suck on the track, great dailies. R-S3 work better on lighter cars, the ZII's are just right, lasted me two track seasons. As good as you can get without going to R comps.
I've driven all 4 on the track: PSS = Just not fun on the track and you will tear them up. R-S3 = Ok but they get greasy and don't last as long ZII = Last a long time and give great feed back R = Oh wow the grip! |

Personnally I use PSS 265/30R19 & 295/30R19 for everyday driving and for wet track day on OEM wheel and use square setup Nitto NT-01 275/35R18 for dry track day.
I heard the new bridgestone RE-71R are really a great value for the price. Last edited by Norm1M; 06-09-2016 at 09:39 AM.. |

One reason I like a square setup is all of the rubber options. That said, between the RS3 and PSS I would choose the RS3 personally. They will have more dry grip and will hold up better to some track duty. Trade off vs PSS is wet performance, more road noise, less life. Another option would be the Yoko AD08 in 265/35 - 295/30.

I'm on my 2nd set of RS3 and they hold up great on the track plus the price is not to bad.

Thanks for the input. Think I am going for a set of 265/35 and 285/35 in the PSS.
I can get a set locally (CDN) for the same price as the R-S3. My 6 track days are simply fun outtings, affording the opportunity to crush my brother in his Ferrari and/or Porsche.

Isn't that too wide for the 1M ?
I think my next set of tires will be Yokohama AD08R because they should be the perfect trade off between the Michelin PSS and the PSC2. I use my car for trackdays, but also on the street during the weekend.

Between the two rs3 and as a weekend/track you, as others have said the PSS don't fair excellently on the track.
Somehow Neil does very wells it's them with more power then any of us but I end up sliding around 3/4 through a 20 minute stint on track in florida whereas the rs3's feel great. I've also recently run a mixed setup, 265 PSS in the front and 305 rs3's in the rear and it's less good then rs3's all around on the track but less noise on the street from the PSS and seems much better in the rain, on the street the rs3's allow for amazing low speed acceleration(20-70mph)

I ran 19" PSS and 18" PSS - the wear seems to be OK, with 19" I can't rotate them but with the 18" I had 265 all around so I can. RE-71R is prone to hydro-planing (which is why I shy away from them as I do drive mine on weekends), Z-IIs are loud (but fresh PSS seems to be loud as well at least when I travel down the North-West on I-5) but I didn't consider because I can get PSS in Canada for a decent price.

Anything above 50 degrees the R-S3s own the PSSs, except for road noise and ride. Handling and braking is considerably better from a track perspective. 1-1.5 seconds a lap difference consistently for me at my local track (3 mile). If you have upgraded brakes you'll notice an even bigger difference. In the wet or colder temps they are sketchy. They do run a bit wider than the PSSs.
