If you thought the 135i is a bit expensive

Check out what edmunds.com said about 135i's competitor, 2008 STI

The cost of entry for a plain STI is $35,640, compared to $34,120 for the 2007 edition. For that you get everything except a navigation system and the optional BBS forged-aluminum wheels that reduce unsprung weight by about 7 pounds at each corner. Our car had both of these options and stickered at $39,440.

A decently equiped 135i will run around 41-42k. So an additional of 1500 to 2000 dollars. I say the 135i is fairly priced. If the additional cost is such an issue then the stripperella EVO maybe a better choice for those who care.

I think the base price (non BBS and Nav) STI is somewhat acceptable for those that need practicality in their car, but I have a hard time justifying the STI over the 135 when my wife already drives a CRV and I don't need a hatch.

I would consider it more seriously if it was cheaper, but I think the US will have a hard time accepting such a high priced hatch...

Plus, I'm still pissed the US gets a slower steering rack, crappy seats, and no push start.

Ok i will admit the STI in my opinion is overpriced and when compared to a 135 its a no brainer unless your a huge tuner fan the the STI will suit your needs better

the interior has been stepped up in the sti in my opinion. The 1er has the classic look while the interior of the sti has a younger, hip look to it that will attract the boy racer crowd/ tuner crowd. there is a royal following for the STi, so i believe there will be a mark up on these cars. A lot of people dont like the look of the STi, but with a few inexpansive tweaks (new grill, red tint on rear lights). The car can look amazing.

I feel strange saying this since I'm only 16 but I think the STI looks really childish. Mostly because of the scoop and the other stuff on there. Too "look at me" for my tastes:iono:

Nice comparison. Comparing the Infiniti G37 would also show the 1-er is a good value for a BMW.

[sidebar; I actually like that modded STI in the pic above. Yes I agree with ichiban it's a bit immature, but most hot-rods are!]

Its just my opinion, 90-95% people shopping a 1-series will not cross-shop for an Evo or Sti. The Evo and Sti are like many have said immature or boy-racer.

The Audi A3 3.2 is basically the 135i main luxury competitor in the US. The A3 3.2 ($34,915) base price is more than the 135i base price ($34,900). It shows what a bargain the 135i actually is, with way more performance.

Fair pricing is not a wholly relative concept. I don't think the price of the STi matters at all whether judging the 135i pricing. Maybe they're both overpriced? The 135 certainly is.

I really don't think the STi looks "boy racerish" at all. I think the previous model had plenty of those qualities, but the new version is WAY more subdued. The STi is an extremely capable vehicle with its AWD and LSD. If I lived in an area that got a good amount of snow and ice I'd get one in a heartbeat.

There is already a really good thread on the site that covers this debate much more thoroughly than this thread.

Unless if you want to race the car..
3 limited diffs and AWD vs 1 damn open diff... guess which one
gives you better value for the same price?

... how is the A3 the main competitor to the BMW 1-series? You're comparing a 4 door hatchback with more focus on luxury vs. a racing-inspired two door RWD coupe. The A3 also features quattro so there's some value in that as well. At least compare apples-to-apples.

Actully I think the next gen of both are a little more grown up (as all of the reviews have stated). I think they are both going in the right direction for sure ..

In Europe the A3 is a competitor to the 1-series. The fact Audis are quattro hasn't stopped people from comparing the 3-series and A4, 5-series and A6, etc...

From your logic the STI should not be a competitor either.

Please tell me a US luxury competitor.

I agree.

It looks like a station wagon.

My Dad's company cars in the '70's were station wagons. Because of those cars I will NEVER own a 5-door/ sport wagon/ 4-door hatchback or whatever the marketing folks label them!

The STI would sell at 32-33 IMO, but at 35 things are getting out of hand. No way a souped up Impreza hatch is going to sell at those rates no matter how sophisticated the electronics may be.

well this is the first year the STi has different body panels than the regular WRX. This is a big reason for the higher price of the STi. Did you see the front and rear fender flares?!?

Are we looking at the same car? The clear ricer tail lights tell it all. Plus the wide/flared body kit, scoops, huge wing, huge diffuser, huge coffee can exhaust.

It has boy-racer written all over it!

Agree,

$35,000 for the EVO and Sti is getting out of hand. Especially now that they killed the EVO with over 3500+ lbs. for 4-cylinder, that is just crazy.

The cult like following of the STi crowd will make this car sell in large numbers. They will have no problem unloading these off the dealer lots. An amazing car performance wise, that will most likely blow the door off of cars exponentially more expensive than it on the track. This is an enthusiast car, it will sell. Saying it won't is like saying no one will ever spend $65+k on a souped up BMW 3 series. Or who in their right mind would spend $70k on a souped up Audi A4. Enthusiasts are different than your typical buyer.
