I think part of the problem for BMW is that a very high proportion of their cars are leased rather than purchased. Leases are basically loans, and since the credit market has frozen up I assume it is very hard to get a lease approved these days, or even for BMW to borrow money to offer leases to its own customers.
I did not realize such a high proportion of BMW's cars are leased rather than purchased (60%?) until I bought my first BMW (135i) in May and started reading posts on this forum. |

'eh.. It's only for a week at two locations. Not that bad. I suppose it's better than massive layoffs, which may also not be out of the realm of possibility.
